Without Change - There would be no "New" ~
Hey everyone,
hope you're all having a banner season ~ I was thinking to myself lately, that I like to find something "new" in my garden - whether it be a cross, or volunteers, or anything ! I'm all for preserving the past and keeping them around for centuries to come - But the time is NOW to make or find new varieties !!! Isn't that what our tomato founders did years and years ago ? "Natural Selection" / breeding etc. ??? In my opinion: If you've got voluteers ? Grow em - If you have a cross ? Stabilize it ! Lets do it !!! Lets make new heirlooms for the future , while preserving the past !!! ~ Tom ps. sorry for the rant ... I want ALL of us to have our own "project/tomato" ; just like lots of people before us did ~

Agreed, Tom - I suspect that this has been done all along by home gardeners (and contributes to the large array of heirlooms available to us all through the SSE and other mechanisms); certainly me and many of us here always include mysteries and experiments in our gardens. Our Dwarf project is an example that is being played out right here on Tville!

And I agree Tom. Makes me not want to bag any more too. I have what I think is a Tangella / Black Cherry cross that looks (and tastes) promising and also a volunteer from the year after growing Sweet Million. It has been true for 3 years; thin-skinned, delicious, and you can’t make it crack on the vine no matter what you do. It was DW's favorite ‘til she got a taste of Odoriko last season.
Here it is next to Sungold:

I have a San Francisco Fog PL variation growing this year. Anyone want to get in on the attempt to see if it's stable?

I just like to see unexpected things
pop up sometimes ~ By all means, I'm not saying unbag your blossoms ... or cross everything in your garden ~ But what I am saying, is give crosses and volunteers a chance ~ who knows what you'll get ... And if you're making a deliberate cross ? Good for you ~ now stabilize it !!! ~ Tom

Yes indeed, mysteries are fun! I have 3 going this year (4 if you count the Super Beefsteak plant that came up PL I gave to a friend.) Mountaineer Mystery (most of y'all know about that one), I have what appears to be a rugose leafed semi determinate that the seed pack was marked "Unknown Red Potato Leaf), and a dwarf that came from Sweet Thing (grape) seeds. Here's a pic of that one...

"Good for you ~ now stabilize it !!! "
I'm working on it!!! It takes time!!! - I'm a kidder please be patient with my warped sense of humor. I'm into crosses. What a blast. Since you brought it up, does anyone know if there are any/many PL grape tomatoes? The reason I ask is because I may have one. I had been thinning out the PL seedlings because the variety that I'm trying to stabilize is RL. I kept wondering what I was throwing away, so I decided to keep a couple of the PLs this time around. One appears to be a small beefsteak and the other is the aforementioned PL grape. Edit: As I think about it, I'm not sure if it is a grape or just oval shaped. Should I start another thread and post a picture? Randy |

Grunt, Dunkel, WV Tomatoman, and others with PL variants growing,
PL varieties are my passion as you well know. "There is always room for one more "spudleaf in my house." Put my name on the list to on the attempt to see if they are stable ? PM me with the PL varieties you have!!! Grunt, I'll take some of those take some seed from the PL variant you found in the RL San Francisco Fog. How about "Golden Gate Mist" PL for a moniker (name). It's your choice. PL me with your snailmail info and I'll send a SASE and some unusuual PL's I have Dunkel, the same goes for the Super Beefsteak plant that came up PL WV Tomatoman, Ditto for you also on your newly found PL's. Best regards, Bill Malin |

Just for the record ...
I wrote to preserve the old time maters ; (aka bag blossoms) but at the same time ... try to make something new and different ~ Thats what the farmers of the early 1900's did ... Why can't we ? They weren't educated in horticulture ; they just did what tasted good ~ I do understand the deeper meaning of " it all "... Sorry to have to explain myself here ... Bullys bugged me out !!! ~ Tom
