Granny Cantrell is....pink!

Primarily to Gary (who sent me seeds for this) - have you or anyone else ever seen a pink-fruited result from Granny Cantrell? Because that's what I have....will take a pic and post later on (one fruit has a bit of BER so is ripening, but it is going to be most definitely pink (clear skin), not red (yellow skin).

My Granny never made it to fruit she died as a young plant.... Gary is a nice fellow he sent me the Orange Mennonite and GCrantrell.

The one I got from my dad's garden this year (my plant from seed received from Gary in 04) was also pink.
The one's in my garden haven't ripened yet.

The picture below shows Granny Cantrell on the right, and a red BHN589 on the left.

I seem to remember a thread here about whether GC was red or pink. People posted pictures of both colors, I think. SESE has it listed in the pink section of the 2007 catalog and Baker Creek lists it as red.

Yes, we have discussed "Granny Cantrell's German Tomato here.
As you may recall, Lettie shared this variety with me; she called it her German Red because that was what it was called when given to her originally.
So, when I shared seed with gardening friends I called it "Granny Cantrell's" German Red. Earl posted a picture of it and a red tomato side by side and it appeared to be more pink in color. I discussed this with Craig and several others here at length. I dropped the red from the name and suggested to Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and Baker Creek that they do the same as Merlyn had grown and shared the seed with them.. Merlyn and I discussed this at length in correspondence and in person when we spent time together at the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy Fall Conference last October; he still thinks it is more red in color.
I germinated seed for it this year but have one of my "foster" tomato growers growing it.
SSE listings were made before any of this was discussed. I believe that Michael has it listed as red and there may be others.

I did go ahead and put in both "Granny Cantrell" and "Granny Cantrell's German" as akas in PlantFiles. Mainly so there don't end up being three different entries for the same variety.

I grew it this year, and what I am getting is definitely pink. And I agree with Red in that what he is growing is definitely "red through and through", based on his pictures. :-) Mikey Joe's pic looks like it could go either way, maybe pink.

My photo seems to have been taken in much brighter light than the others, which might account for some of the apparent color difference.

In any case, I think it's a very good variety.

Suze, I think this is interesting! I shared the same seed you received with Red, Shoe, Merlyn, Craig and Lee and many others. As I indicated above, I decided to drop the red and just call it "Granny Cantrell's" German Tomato.
Well, Thanks to Ms. Lizzie Cantrell; I know she would be most pleased that folks are growing and enjoying her tomatoes no matter what color they get! (smile)
