growing tomatoes in lasagna bed
I have grown vegetables, flowers in lasagna garden beds this past year and they did really good. what I want to do this next year is to grow about 36-38 tomato plants in a lasagna bed. I figure on having five , 4x8 foot beds, spacing the plants 16" apart in each bed. tomatoes would be indeterminet an determint plants.
Has anyone had tomato plants in lasagna beds and any advised on raising tomatoes this way? how were they staked? I plan on using the florida weave for keeping them off the ground. I would like any suggestions or advised on this plan thanks Errol |

Errol - I can't comment on the Lasagna method as I haven't tried it before. For the spacing, it's going to depend on the ultimate size of your plants. With small determinates you could probably get away with 16" spacing. For larger indeterminates, I would suggest at least 2' and ideally 3'.

I've never heard the term before so I did a google on it. One of the other names this technique is called is "Sheet composting". It's no till and should develop a good microbial herd. Here's a link, Ami

Errol :A few years ago when I first went back to gardening, I tried the lasagna method with great success, using the layering method that Ami writes about. Since then, I went to 7 raised beds, which I have filled using the lasagna or sheet composting method. This year I also planted another ground level bed using the system as well as one that was developed on an incline. I don't think you can go wrong with this system and each year you can add to the layers at the end of the season. Its also a great way to get rid of excess shredded paper, etc.
