Default Don't sit with me in a car for 6 hours unless...

you're prepared to listen to me talk about tomatoes

I had a 3 hour drive each way with a co worker today for a meeting. My friend is from upstate NY and I told her all about my little baby tomatoes growing in my house and then proceeded to spend a good long time telling her all about heirlooms (poor thing). Like most people, she admitted she just thought all tomatoes were red, and had no idea what a hybrid or heirloom was. Well, that just opened the door for more conversation ...

She told me they can't grow tomatoes at her NJ house because of all the trees and she isn't at the summer house often enough to care for them. So I asked her if she got sun on her deck, which she does. I promised to totally hook her up with seedlings for containers next summer. Even some colored ones !

I'm such a nerd. I wonder if bug people are like this?

I'm proud of you for spreading the good word about heirloom tomatoes.

Don't forget that to let her know that are now almost a dozen Cross Hemisphere Dwarf Project varieties available for folks that have limited space to grow tomatoes.

Whenever you visit my grave,

say to yourselves with regret

but also with happiness in your hearts

at the remembrance of my long happy life with you:

"Here lies one who loved us and whom we loved."

No matter how deep my sleep I shall hear you,

and not all the power of death

can keep my spirit

from wagging a grateful tail.

Haha, that sounds exactly like me. Once I was rambling about tomatoes and how I want to cross breed them and I spent about half an hour explaining to my friend how to cross pollinate, what an F1 is, hybrids, heirlooms, etc. Also most of my friends think all tomatoes are red (They caught me yelling at a seed catalog with red only tomatoes).

It's great to know there's others who are tomato nerds also!!!

Glad to hear I'm not alone! Last night during our usual bed time conversation, I was going on and on about these new dwarf tomatoes I'd just learned about, and how I could grow some in containers... My husband asked a few questions to be polite which got me blabbing even more, but I finally got him to the point where he had to turn to me and say, "just give it up Hun, and go to sleep." He knows me so well, and knows he hasn't heard the last about these dwarf tomatoes...

While it's great to have people in your life who share your obsessions, it's also helpful to have those who will tolerate them!

Well, I'm pretty excited that I have 4 baby tomatoes on my indoor Silvery Fir Tree, they are so cute! I forgot how much I missed watching them grow already and winter has not yet begun...

I had given a few people tomato plants to grow indoors (dwarfs, but older ones) and found out one "gardener" killed hers already, and my friend who has a brown thumb reported tonight that hers are flowering and she can't believe it, so happily at least one other person I know personally will understand my excitement at these little things (I hope)

I once saw a photo of the tomato festival in Spain where they throw tomatoes at each other and almost cried over all those poor tomatoes that no one got to eat.

There's something similar in Pittston, PA. They have a tomato festival every August and one of the activities is that tomato tossing. It actually looks like it could be fun.

I am getting my mom to order a few heirloom varieties this year. My problem is trying to find someone who is "interested" enough to have that tomato conversation with. Not even the folks at our local farmers market are interested in it and they were trying to sell several OP varieties. Ah well.... what do you do?

Well today I succeeded in "corrupting" the plumber. He was amazed at the odd color tomatoes ripening on the counter, so of course I gave them some. He will be back in spring for some plants.

Another one bites the dust!
