Covering garden for hard winter in New England
I covered my garden last November with black plastic, i thought it would keep out some nasty winter ice, and spring rain, heat the dirt in spring also. If i had some disease this year on my plants should i not put this on? Let the dirt freeze for these months.

I'm of the mind that leaving garden soil open to the elements is beneficial. It's too late now, but planting a cover crop would provide a better alternative.
