Very nice looking tomatoes -
This is my first year
for black varieties ...
Mine include:
Black from Tula (my fav. tomato this year)
Carbon (waiting)
& Black Prince (waiting) ...
I'm def. going to plant "more" next year as
the flavor so far has been out of this world !

Tom, I didn't realize this is your first year for blacks. They are fabulous! You need Paul Robeson! I'll check my seed stock...we need to do another swap.

Congratulations. Paul Robeson is one of my favorites, and was one of my top two best tasting darks this year.

I wasn't nearly impressed with my Paul Robeson as I was with my Cherokee Chocolate. Paul Robeson to me was mild and/or somewhat bland. Maybe i overwatered and diluted the flavor

That colour sure is gorgeous - is that a true reflection, or is the picture on the dark side?

That is a nice looking tom. Mine last year was small seedy little things that fed the chooks. A cross or a dud I don't know , but not what it was meant to be.

Tom, Carbon are worth waiting for. Mine were very late but big and wonderful. I have a pic of them somewhere but its getting so hard to find them.

I just had a thought. A tomato pics folder with folders within labeled A to Z (Zogola, bring it on :-). This would make t hem easy to find

kimpossible, The picture of Paul Robeson is only a little darker than the tomato. For me it is turning out very dark and has a powerful tomato flavor without an acid bite.

That's great, Dennis! I haven't grown it yet, & from what I have read the "blacks" are darker in the south, so it is good to know you achieved that colour in PA - gives me hope!

I grew Paul Robeson last year and I was completely unimpressed. It was not bad just nothing special.

I write that off to it being in a 5 gallon pail. I know I'm a broken record on this but I often mention this because think it is important for context - I don't like growing tomatoes in containers. Of the 12 tomatoes in 5 gallon pails last year, none other than Azoychka was really good, 60% new that season and 40% were varieties I have grown in the garden in the past. Many that are excellent (in the garden) were lousy, so I am totally anti-container. The reason I say all that is PR may be good but my experience was such that I'd never waste space on it again. In the garden last year I grew Black From Tula and it too was disappointing but the slugs just devoured the fruits, I figured no loss, another I'd not grow again!

I want to try Carbon next year. Is anyone growing Carbon, Black from Tula and Paul Robeson this year that could compare their thoughts on the 3?

Tom
