Winners for first tomatoes
The winners for the first plants to set tomatoes:
Stupice Pink Honey Early Wonder Gardener's Dream I hear early wonder is on several people's "spitter list" I havent tried it before so we will see what happens. Several people don't like Stupice but I do (being Czech makes me biased) Lots of good reviews on Pink Honey, that one came from MikeInOhio I don't know anything about gardener's dream, it is a Ukrainian commercial open pollinated sort. |

I'm trying Siberian Pink Honey from Mike as well. I'm happy to hear that the description of it being really early is true! Of course, mine are still in cups, and can't go outside for another few weeks. Snow in Reno and the Sierra Nevada yesterday, hail and high winds today, and back in the 80s by Monday. Sigh.

Early Girl and Sungold set first fruits a week ago.
I noticed first set on Anna Russian today.

The first tomatoes to set fruit for me were the Lemon Boy then the Early Girl. The Early Girl has set more fruit than the Lemon Boy.

It's a tasty little tomato, and I've used it in sauces with good success, but I wouldn't say it's what I would call a true 'paste', at least.

From the late February planting, White Rabbit (a cherry) was first and has 2 1/2 full trusses set already. Blonde Boar/White Zebra was second and Black Cherry was third.
All of the following have one or two tiny tomatoes that I've just seen within the last couple of days. Tasmanian Red (a dwarf), Cherokee Purple, Amish Paste, Striped Cavern, Hazelfield Farm, KBX, and Juane Flamme. I think that's it. I've had a ton of blossoms drop this year and I was starting to think they would never set. The last couple of days have been a big relief! There are a few more that I'm pretty sure have set, but with so many blossoms dropping, I'm not counting them until they are very clearly set and growing. My dwarf kids are still troubling me. The Waratah especially have had a tremendous number of flowers and appear to be very healthy, but they are dropping without setting. I added some more fertilizer today, so maybe that will help. It's a bit frustrating seeing all of those potential tomatoes just falling away. |

My Sungold was first to set, and it just ripened its second cherry. It's miles ahead of the rest of the pack, including black and other cherries. The jury is still out on who which will be the first full-size tomato to ripen. l gave the first one to my sweetness, but I claim every 3/4" of the second for myself.

I got so caught up in complaining about our weather, that I neglected to say that I also have one plant that has set fruit! That's a record for me this early in the season. It's one of the Dwarf Tomato Project plants... Plucky F2. It's a cross between Galina's Yellow and Golden Dwarf Champion. It's only been 78 days since the seed was started! It's growing inside a Wall O'Water and is about 17" high and just beginning to grow out the top of the WOW. It's got a lot of buds and blossoms on it and about 7 tomatoes already. I don't know exactly what the size and color are going to be yet, but the shape is oval. Fun stuff!
