Thanks. Will share in the fun.
Ping Pong is now on hold That's one down, about 12 to go. Speaking of Daylillies, I wish I could transplant mine. By the time I know where they are they have sprouted leaves Have a good night. Off to make a cup of tea to have with half a packet of Hundreds and Thousand biscuits. Mmm. |

Based on your list, I would remove the ones that you've
grown before, but are still negotiable. To me, this means you've grown 'em, liked 'em enough to plant again, but they're not in your top ten.... So, I say make room for the newbies to see if there are any more top tens to be found. Here's the ones in those categories with some added opinions... *Anna Russian - Great variety, but this is one I also sacrifice to add more that I haven't tried.... *Cherokee Purple - Tough call here, but if you've got other blacks.... *Cuostralee - Got to draw the line here. I can't tell everyone this is the BEST tomato around, and also suggest not growing it to you..... So, keep this one! German Johnson - Never impressed me, but it's a new one for you. But if you've got to get rid of just one more..... *Grandfather Ashlock - Loved this one, and it is slowly becoming part of my top ten, but since you've tried it.... cull it too... *Gregori’s Altai (ex Korney/Chuck W.) - Never tried. *Kellogg’s Breakfast - I prefer Orange Heirloom, but since you've grown this one... cull it. Noire de Cosebo ?? Noire de Coeuseboeuf I think. Visually appealing, can't say about the taste as I didn't get a chance to try it at TPIV. Here's a picture... http://www.tomatopalooza.org/tomatop...s/IMG_0130.JPG *Nepal *Paul Robeson - Again, you've grown 'em before so try something new...... Hope this helps, Lee P.S. Are you going to be growing any of the F2s from the dwarf project?

Hi Villains,
Here's my first list. Are there any that I should not grow? Any input welcome. Thanks, Grub... So how many do I get to delete, as in how many can you plant and how many do you WANT us to delete?

OK - I'll play! Typical disclaimer - these are my views only...to be taken with a grain of salt!
MAIN ONES *•Akers West Virginia - keeper *Anna Russian - keeper •Anna Banana Russian - keeper •Basinga - cull *•Box Car Willie - depends upon how many medium reds you want *•Faux BCW - cull (is it stable? what is it? etc) *•Brandywine Sudduth - keeper *•Earl’s Faux - keeper perhaps - though to me it is likely just Brandywine Sudduth *Cherokee Purple - keeper Crnovis Yugoslavian (??? - never grown) Cuor de Boeuf - (ditto) *Cuostralee - cull (Lee and I have very different views on this one - I have no luck at all with it) •Dr Lyle (??? - never grown) German Johnson - cull *•German Red Strawberry keeper Giant Italian Potato Leaf (USDA) ?? - cull *•GMG PL & RL - must be a keeper for you! *Grandfather Ashlock - keeper *Gregori’s Altai (ex Korney/Chuck W.) - keeper Indian Stripe - keeper, to get another comparison with Cherokee Purple Kalman’s Hungarian Pink ?? - (?? - never grown) Kellehers ?? (ditto) *Kellogg’s Breakfast - cull - I just don't care for the flavor....way too mild for me Khirhiv ?? - (?? - never grown) Kornesevvsije ?? (ditto) Kosovo ?? (ditto - but gets rave reviews) *•Livingstons Favorite - depends on how many medium reds you want Marizol Bratka (aka Purple Brandywine?)? - cull Marizol Maroon - (?? - never grown) Marizol Korney (ditto) Mary Italian ?? (ditto) Mary Reynolds ?? (ditto) Momotaro *(ditto) Mortgage Lifter (Ester’s) - Lost seedling due to crud. cull Noire de Cosebo ?? pretty much exactly same as Purple Calabash. Worth seeing at least once! *Nepal - keeper *•Neves Azorean Red - keeper Old Virginia ?? - depends on how many huge reds you want - similar to Neves, Akers Oleyar’s German (?? - never grown) Orange Oxheart (ditto) *Paul Robeson - keeper Pearl’s Yellow Pink - depends on how many large yellow/red bicolors you want. It is a good one. *•Polish (Earl) - keeper Polish (Eckerts) (so-so on this one) Potato Leaf (Aussie version) (?? never grown) *•Prue - keeper *•Red Brandywine - keeper, but depends on how many medium reds you want Russian #117 - keeper Sojourner ?? - cull *•Soldacki - depends on how many large pink potato leaf varieties you want Stump of the World ?? - keeper, esp. if you've not tried it Thesaloniki ?? - cull Velvet Red - cull *•Wes (?? - never grown) Yellow Belgian (ditto) Zogola - keeper Cherry *Black Cherry - keeper *•Dr Carolyn - cull •Pasture (?? - never grown) x [Pink Ping Pong] - Deleted. Possible Cross) - anyone grow this one out this season? *Rose Quartz Multiflora - cull Saras Galapagos - keeper (have you tried Mexico Midget?) *Sungold - keeper Sweet Quartz - keeper Texas Wild ?? (? never grown) Tiny Tim (maybe in a pot) (ditto) Novelty - won't comment on two of these Nepal x Tommy Toe Speckled Roman - keeper Wuhib Pots •Dwarves *•Kimberley - keeper *•Russian Red (? - never grown) *•Sophies Choice- cull; pretty poor tasting for me this year

Wow Grub, that’s some list.
I don’t see any I’d say ‘don’t grow’ (many I haven’t tried yet) but Stump of the World has ?? next to it. I’d say it’s a must grow, heavy producer of very large, delicious tomatoes. This was my second year with it and it’ll always make the list.

Fabulous list, I wish I had space for that many. I noticed you grow Kimberly in a pot. Any particular reason for this? I've never grown it before but plan on trying it next year. What is the overall growth habit of Kimberly?

Awesome list! Just commenting on 4 you haven't grown yet that I have. This year, Indian Stripe and Sara's Galapagos are hands down winners in my garden! Last year, I really enjoyed Kosovo and Russian 117. They were both heavy producers of quite yummy tomatoes.

Narrowing Things Down
Thanks for your help.
Last year I grew 57 varieties, but mainly just one of each except for the pots, where I double and even triple the planting. Kimberley did fantastically well in an 8 gallon pot. It hits about 4-5ft and has an open rangy habit that doesn’t smother other potted tommies around it. Only needs a few ties here and there. Lee, I see your logic and thanks for that. I’ve grown Cuostralee for three seasons but this year I’m trying a different seed source. Hopefully it produces more regular-shaped fruit. Indian Stripe will replace Cherokee Purple. Carolyn, Hi. Hopefully some of the remaining oldies or soakers in this list germinate. Thanks for the seeds. I would be grateful if I could cut the list by half, really. Craig, Thanks for your comments. Last year I found the medium reds like Red Brandywine and Livingston’s Favorite were just great dependable tomatoes. I do place a lot of value on productivity, which varies from two or three tomatoes on some vines to dozens on others. I guess productivity and flavour are the keys for me. I’ll be applying your suggestions to the list. Hi Tom, Was Thessaloniki productive and tasty? How’s your big yellow coming along? Bruce, I knew I had read a lot about Stump of the World. Have to try this one. Not sure what the stump has to do with it, but it’s an interesting name. Christine, Indian Stripe, Sara's Galapagos, Kosovo and Russian 117 are stayers Oh, and I am going to grow the dwarfs. About 10. Thanks again, Off to tackle the boat show. – Grub. |

If I cut anyone's favorite or your brothers, mothers, sisters namesake's or 3rd cousin twice removed ...I'm sorry.
Here is what I'd do with the list, which doesn't mean it's what I think you should do but I'm feeling a little selfish and self centered and more than a bit ignored by Mrs. Bully. So I'll just answer the way I want and the gosh darnoodley dishes can wait till the morning, it;s not like they're gonna get any dirtier! jeesh.. green is for Go Yellow..grow it don't grow it either way Red = cull (but not necessarily because it's bad, could be just that I grew before and space and time are limited) No opinion= Yes, there are rare times that I actually do not have a tomato opinion, as I approach 40 I have decided to become more stately, maybe I'll fool folks into believing that I'm wise. MAIN ONES *•Akers West Virginia *Anna Russian •Anna Banana Russian •Basinga *•Box Car Willie *•Faux BCW - stabe large yummy red. *•Brandywine Sudduth *•Earl’s Faux x [*Cherokee Purple] Crnovis Yugoslavian Cuor de Boeuf *Cuostralee •Dr Lyle x [German Johnson] *•German Red Strawberry Giant Italian Potato Leaf (USDA) ?? *•GMG PL & RL *Grandfather Ashlock *Gregori’s Altai (ex Korney/Chuck W.) Indian Stripe Kalman’s Hungarian Pink ?? Kellehers ?? *Kellogg’s Breakfast Khirhiv ?? Kornesevvsije ?? Kosovo ?? *•Livingstons Favorite Marizol Bratka (aka Purple Brandywine?)? Marizol Maroon Marizol Korney Mary Italian ?? Mary Reynolds ?? Momotaro Mortgage Lifter (Ester’s) - Lost seedling due to crud. Noire de Cosebo ?? *Nepal *•Neves Azorean Red Old Virginia ?? Oleyar’s German Orange Oxheart *Paul Robeson Pearl’s Yellow Pink *•Polish (Earl) Polish (Eckerts) Potato Leaf (Aussie version) *•Prue *•Red Brandywine Russian #117 Sojourner ?? *•Soldacki Stump of the World ?? Thesaloniki ?? Velvet Red *•Wes Yellow Belgian Zogola Cherry *•Black Cherry *•Dr Carolyn •Pasture x [Pink Ping Pong] - re-instated x[Riesentraube] Riesentraube ( Dr. C. Possible Cross) - anyone grow this one out this season? x[Rose Quartz Multiflora] Saras Galapagos *Sungold Sweet Quartz Texas Wild ?? Tiny Tim (maybe in a pot) Novelty Nepal x Tommy Toe Speckled Roman Wuhib - for the front garden Pots •Dwarves x 10 *•Kimberley x 4 *•Russian Red x 2 *•Sophies Choice x 2 |

Thanks Carolyn
Hi Bully,
Thanks for putting the washing-up on hold. Got your priorities right Hope you still get desserts. Thanks to your help I think we're going some way to finalising the list. The cull is tonight. Once squared away we'll don those red-lycra suits you sent me and dance under the full moon before the tomato altar while passing the chalice filled with Daconil and chanting the secret mantra written on squirel skin by your dog. Usual pre-season stuff. Ta, Grub |

Great list Grub, and some good suggestions too.
If anyone is wondering about Nepal X Tommy Toe, they are a cross I made last year. One plant produced well over a hundred near golf ball size fruit. Taste was tart with a lingering flavour. I am growing the F2's this year and the seedlings although not showing true leaves yet look interesting. Very stout short seedlings. Time will tell. Heres a picking from last year. I was picking them as the started to colour as the birds liked them as well. Useless cats |
