Default Why did they name it "100's & 1000's"

I just can't seem to figure out how it got its name. Do you suppose it will produce a lot of little toms????

I might have made one of the biggest mistakes ever. I planted a 100s & 1000s AND a Pearly Pink Orange in a single Earth Box and they are about to take over the greenhouse. And it's only June 18!

FILMNET, this is one that is different from the ones you list. I just thought it was neat that the danged thing threw a truckload of blooms all at once.

FILMNET, Supersweet 100's are very red and sweet, maybe you got something else by mistake.

I love that little tomato producing machine. It's the one I put my grandson's name on so that he can see that we really can grow tomatoes here! Ha..even tho they are little!

Didn't check it out but I thought it was an English variety or first introduced in England and our British friends are not prone to understatement as in First in the Field for this and that, whether it be cabbage or tomatoes or b spouts, etc.

To check my memory, yes, it is a British introduction and possibly it was Sutton's who did so.

Ted, you did ask why it was named what it was, and aside from you counting fruits to be sure you got up to 1000, I still think it's the British way of things to name it what they did.

I have grown this one and it really is loaded ..with very tiny fruit.

Hundreds and Thousands is the name of a very tiny coloured cake decoration in the UK, a sprinkling type thing that one shakes loads of on the top of cakes and trifles. I suspect this is where the name may have come from.

Just a thought.

You should know Jeannine and thanks for that suggestion.

I order some of my eating dark chocolate from King Arthur Flour and one time the freebie sent were vials of various single colors and some mixed colors as well, to be used for the same purposes as you noted above, I never used them since I've never used my oven to bake anything since I moved here, but they didn't have a catchy name like 100's and 1000's.

Carolyn, the three years I lived in England up in East Anglia (actually Lakenheath AFB) taught me that the British have their own way of naming all things - and some of those might not make a lot of sense to us "Yanks".

And, I hope you noticed that my outrageous question in post #1 was totally with tongue in cheek.

Take care of yourself, lady.

I think anything that is sprinkled on a cake is called Hundreds and Thousands in the UK although if being accurate only the tiny balls are actually them. There are many names among bakers, sprinkles, pearls, sugar confetti, jimmies, sugar dots, sugar strands and nonpareils but they are all referred to as Hundreds and Thousands by most folk. A bit like the vacuum cleaner which most people simply call a Hoover and when using it they are hoovering. Or washing the pots, when most of them are dishes.

Ted, I got the message in your post, I don;t think too many folks know this tomato though. Good Luck with it..oh and feed it well.

That plant is amazing with all of those little blooms! Is it determinate, one almighty flourish and it's done? or will it keep doing that, over and over?

Hope they're tasty!

It is a centiflor, will spread to about 2-2 1/2 feet with about 100 flowers on each truss, however not all flowers produced fruit for me. Taste compared to most hanging baskets types was pretty good, eg better than a Tumbler. The fruit are about 5/8" maybe, definately bigger than a currant tomato.
