Volunteer plants!
My Mom told me a couple months ago that she had 2 volunteer tomato plants in her tractor tire "flower beds" and asked if wanted to transplant them. It kinda went in one ear and out the other and I forgot about them.
This past week she asked if we would stake her volunteer plants. I'm thinking maybe they're 18 inches tall and really leggy after all they're surrounded by flowers and competing for water and nutrients. WRONG!!! These plants were nearly 4 feet tall with stems the size of my thumb! They may turn out to be undesirable but I've always been enthused by "volunteers", it's like God wanted that plant to grow for a reason. Can't wait to see what they produce! Here they are before being staked. |

I'm letting about ten volunteers grow this year. Most of them are Brown Berry, I'm certain, but several have large fruits on them. One that I just left in the ground has had a gorgeous, biiig tomato for longer than any of my others had fruit set, and I'm really excited to see what color that turns.
