Celebration time!
Monday was a VERY happy day around here.
In one of those rare confluences, such as when multiple planets align, or Christmas and Hannukka take place on the same day, July 9 turned out to be BOTH the date of my first ripe tomatoes---two Stupices---AND the exciting "Tomato Zabby Day." Tomato Zabby Day, children, is the wonderful day of the gardening year when the first tomato plant gets to be as tall as Zabby. This year it was a Sweet 100 plant that hit the mark first. The day is always one of rejoicing, but usually it is the joy of anticipation---tall tomato plants signify a good harvest to come. So to have it come the same day as an ACTUAL HARVEST---earliest ever in my Zone 5 garden---was particularly delightful. I'm only just recovering from the festivities enough to post this. Any other Tomatovillians out there recently celebrate their "day" in the garden? (Think how early you get to celebrate if you are short!) Zabby |

Hooray, It's Zabby Day!
I'm excited too, I found several tomatoes FINALLY beginning to ripen! I have 2 JDs Special C-Tex, a Franchi Red Pear, an Earl's Faux, 2 Vorlon, and a Legend! It has only taken me almost 5 months to get to this point, so I think it's pretty well overdue lol.

In celebration of Zabby Day, I ate my first two garden tomatoes of the season. Yes, let the harvest begin!

Yay! Yesterday I had my first full sized tomato- a black Kirim. I had picked off a few sungolds before and just ate them right off the plant.

Good idea for a day all your own. Guess what? By your reckoning, I celebrated Paul Day on the 9th as well. Ate the first tomato of the year and there are several plants at the 6' level.

Cool that Tomato Paul Day fell on the same day.
Tomato Carols were ringing out from from Nebraska to Ontario.... Now, of course, the task of taking down all those Tomato Zabby Day decorations and answering all those Tomato Zabby Day cards.... Z |

I don't think it is a fair comparison. Since I am 6'3" tall, many people get to celebrate before me because they are vertically challenged. Since I did get to celebrate back in late April, I suppose I should be satisfied. I'm just kinda tired of being left out of the parties.

Aw, Ted, I feel your pain!
Congrats, Zabby and Paul. My tallest plant is now about 2 feet tall. I'd have to shrink pretty small to have my Jane day. j |

Ted,
Well, your plan to move to Texas so the partying could begin earlier certainly seems to have paid off! Jane, Do you have a very young niece or nephew at the crawling stage you could throw a party for? Or maybe a dog? ;-p Z P.S. Three more Stupices today (took nearly a week to get any more after the first few). We're having small but much-appreciated BLTs for lunch! |

Z,
Great idea! I'll have Shadow Day. He's my neighbor's dog who gets me up and moving every day, because he's a ball hound! He's actually a Black Lab who really loves to retrieve that ball several hundred times a day, if I'm willing to bend over and throw that many times. I really credit his insistence to my ability to bend to the task of gardening for so many hours. So Shadow Day it is. Maybe I can have Jane Day by September? j |

So far so good this year. The heat is starting to take a toll on production. My first tomato was Bush Champion , June 14th. My Black Cherry is about 8 foot tall and is still growing We need RAIN.

I feel your pain John. South of you a ways got several inches last week. It's all going around us. Watering today for the third time in three weeks. Will you have tomatoes for the Fest? I have lots of green ones but few ripe ones.
