Default Ant infestation (not farming aphids)

So the ants around here have been getting desperate. They've been coming in looking for food an water several times a day so the organic ant spray and keeping the house spotless from food messes has been going on inside the house.

However, yesterday I noticed something odd they were infesting just one of my tomato plants. I scoured the plant trying to figure out what they were doing since there were almost no aphids on this plant. Also no orderly trails just swarming.

I snapped a couple of pics attached.

Any guesses to what they were doing?

The tomato plant looks like an ant grave yard today, so whatever they were trying to do, it didn't work out that well for the little guys, no sweat off my back though.
