Default My Biggest Of The Season

Here's my personal best and the best one of this growing season.

The tomato I was nursing towards the three pound mark started to flash color so I had to pick it.

2 LBS 8.6 OZ from a Big Zac.

Decent for my rookie year of growing giant tomatoes.

Four pounds will be my goal for next season and being armed with excellent seed, excellent soil and Marv Meisner's book on growing giants I shall reach that goal.

Hi Jeff!!

I let three tomatoes grow on a 6 ft tall plant. I then remove the two that are lagging behind the larger one leaving only one tomato growing.

I will be saving seed from this tomato but will also pay for pedigreed seed from Marv Meisner, the Hunts and Peter Glazebrook the record holder from the UK.

Besides Big Zac I'm also going to grow Delicious, Brutus Magnum and Church for the purpose of growing giants.

Thanks for asking Jeff.

i have a kelloggs breakfast plant that due to conditions wouldnt set fruit. i was only able to get 1 tomato to set during the first 2 months of the growing season. this is on plants that were set out early and got huge. the lone tomato was pushing 2 lbs but prob a little less. it started blushing and i was just about to pick it when i decided i'd give it one more night. unfortunately a critter got it before i did and it was gone before i could weigh it in a try it. its amazing how much bigger a tomato will get when its the only one on a plant

Yes Jeff,

If there is only one tomato the plant concentrates all it's energy and nutrients on that one tomato.

I'm sorry that a critter got your tomato.

Next time try covering the tomato with a wash cloth to hide it's scent and the sight of it.

The shadings main purpose is to retard the ripening process.

Once upon a time...OK, It was 1983. I planted some seeds of "Braggar" tomato. One was a double bloom at least and I left it to grow as big as it wanted. When I picked it nearly ripe, I put it in a plastic bucket that previously held 5 quarts of ice cream to take to the store to weight it. I couldn't get my fingers between tomato and bucket w/o damage so I weighed the bucket and all, 3.75. My biggest ever and now I have lost the seed.

Congratulations Julia! Isn't Big Zack a hybrid?

@ Rockhound, That's a biggie for sure!! Sad that you lost the seeds though. Buy some Big Zac seeds and try again!

@ Ted, yes, Big Zac is hybrid created by Minnie Zaccaria. The cross used has been kept secret.

Hoy made some of my largest tomatoes this year. I didn't weigh any of them, but some were probably close to 2 lbs. It's a great tomato.
