Red beefsteak heirlooms for next yr
I'm looking for two red beefsteak type heirloom tomatoes for my garden next yr. I'm looking for flavor and production. ( I know taste is subjective) I live in the Kc mo area.
Thanks in advance for your help |

So: Neves Azorean Red Aker's West Virginia Chapman Red Penna Milka's Red Bulgarian OTV Brandywine Cuostralee ....... to name a few and not in any specific order although I could try to do that if you wanted me to. But of course it would be my opinion on growing all of them several times, and my tastebuds as well and in my zone 5 area.

i'm just not sure if other seed companies sell a brandywine X NAR cross. if they do i would have just stated the name(dixiewine) but i think its only her site that sells this variety

Marianne originally just listed it as Brandywine X NAR, which is indicated in the link, someone at another site asked why a cross like that was being offered, I ASAP contacted Bill about it b'c I didn't think it was stable yet, and I directed him to her and it took a couple more growouts before it was felt to be stable. Several here at Tville have grown it and I was just sent seeds for it and I'm one who sends seeds to several seed sites for trial where I know the owners well and have for quite a while, so that right now I think you're right, it's the only place where it's offered commercially, but it wouldn't surprise me if someone offered seeds for it in the Seed Exchange Forum here later this year, and since I already know the variety and think it's great, if my growouts next season and seed production go OK, then I too would be offering it in my annual seed offer here. So again, my error in not opening the link b'c I really did think it was a link to the total site as I explained above.

i think i will have to try NAR in the future. i've read about it and if you speak highly of it i'm sure it is a winner
you're right about other vendors selling dixiewine. it wont take long because the tomato is killer. i unfortunately will not be doing a seed offer but maybe in the future i will look into that.

I agree with both Neil for Ashleigh as well as Bill for Zogola and also for Red Barn that KY posted except you asked for heirloom varieties and Red Barn was bred by Joe Bratka's father , who also bred Box Car Willie and Mule Team and Great Divide, however, I also think that Red Barn has been an overlooked variety and it shouldn't be b'c it's really a great variety, just not an heirloom/
When posting my list I sit here at the computer and try to think which large red beefsteaks I want to post knowing full well that I'd overlook many, just too few tomato brain cells left, , so I'm glad to see some that I forgot to post that I also like very much and I'm sure there will be more.

I will also echo Dixiewine. It was the standout new to me variety in my garden this year. Outstanding flavor. Decent production given the extreme heat and drought conditions this year. No disease problems. Seeds obtained from the source linked above. Give it a try. I think you will like it.

Of the many, many red beefsteaks that I've tried, Neves Azorean Red and Shuntukski Velican are the only ones that have superb flavor, in my garden.
