Anyone pickle tomatoes?
I have a good many small green tomatoes and was thinking about pickling them Bread & Butter style along with some Jalapeno, Banana and Bell peppers plus some carrots and celery.
What do you think? Any other suggestions? |

Barry, above is a general search for pickled tomatoes and you'll find lots and lots of links for that subject, all from the Recipe and Harvest Forums here. Just scroll down on the above link for ones posted recently and going backwards many more. Hope that helps.

I had good luck last year making Georgian style spicy pickled green tomatoes. A couple hot peppers and a handful of peeled garlic cloves is the seasoning.

I used a lot of my green tomatoes to make chow-chow, which is really like a sweet pickle relish with green toms subbed for most of the cukes. Mustard and celery seed were the only seasonings besides onions. It came out good, great on a hot dog.

I'd suggest if you can find a recipe someone has already made that they can recommend, that would be great. I tried one for pickled green tomatoes this year and didn't like it as it was too sweet for my tastes. I think I got it out of the Ball Canning Book.

I love pickled tomatoes and tend to lean towards buffet lines that feature them. I've never really pickled anything. I simply don't have the guts to try. I've started a few times and found that someone's "SIMPLE" recipe wasn't so simple for me. I am a good cook and willing to try almost anything in the kitchen, but I don't can and I don't pickle since all of my mothers canned pumpkin jars exploded in the pantry when I was a kid. It sounded like Al Capones St. Valentines day massacre in our pantry. The house smelled like rotten pumpkin for a month.
I almost forgot to mention the cleanup. You need to imagine baby poop after the baby has eaten nothing but Gerbers smashed carrots for a month. It was on every surface in the pantry including the floor, the ceiling, the walls, and every thing on the shelves. It was also laced with very small pieces of broken glass which was very sharp. Needless to say, I don't can and I don't pickle. Ted Last edited by tedln; November 3, 2012 at 12:05 AM. |

I got hit with an early frost one year and had tons of green tomatoes. I pickled them as you would bread and butter pickles along with peppers, kind of hot sweet, like Wickles. They were great.

I love sweet anything, so bread n butter are my faves. Many reviewers of popular cooking websites suggest cutting back the sugar in relish recipes by half, and they were sweet enough for me with that modification.

A tradition in my area. Grew up on them as well as grinding by hand green tomatoes and other veggies for chow chow relish, a southern staple. Here's a pic of both prepared by my grandmother from this year's harvest.
