Vince P1 from Carolyn 2012 offer
Vince P1- I grew out the 2 that lived and got 1 cherry dark purple and delicious, and one is giving me 4 oz red ones that I haven't tasted yet. What did other people get? I think I am supposed to select for the cherrys. Does this variety have a name yet?

What I got last summer were black cherries that, if picked just before they seemed ripe, were heavenly tasting, but if I waited until they seemed ripe, they tasted off, overripe - not so good. Mine also split like crazy, early and often. I'm going to try a couple in my greenhouse this year, to see if more control over watering will reduce the splitting problem.

I grew 4 plants, all were very large cherries, and all absolute spitters no matter when I picked them, sadly.

I agree with the skin splitting issue, but I actually preferred the taste of Vince P-1 to Black Cherry, which I don't care for because to me Black Cherry seems bland. Had no problems with germination or growing.

Yes, the reports for ALL the varieties I distributed seeds for last year were supposed to be posted
in the Fall 2012 performance thread that I put up and many did so for Vince P1. And I mentioned in the 2012 offer that I would be putting up a Fall performance thread. But not everyone sows seeds for all they request in the upcoming season, so I would expect to see that in the germination thread for 2013 as well as the Fall performance thread this Fall for those that weren't grown last season.

I grew three plants last Summer, and the best one produced large cherries that were very tasty. The first fruit appeared around 60 DTM. I also liked them better than Black Cherry, but I also had a big problem with splitting. My three plants were all fairly compact, too, none was over 5 feet. All lasted until frost and they seemed to be fairly disease tolerant.

I'll PM Vince and alert him to these results, I don't know how many who posted in this thread also posted in the performance thread last Fall. Only when someone makes a selection that he or she likes and regrows it for several generations to stability can a name be assigned. Vince had temporarily called it Purple Sungold in his orginal thread, but that's not a final name. Hope that helps. Carolyn

I had posted my Vince P1 results last fall also with photos, but to repeat, I had two large plants for the season, which yielded the black cherry type that many have described. They were very tasty, though I agree that there was a learning curve as to the right time to pick them. The plants did get early blight and didn't fare well after the first wave of harvesting. I did save some seeds from them and intend to grow the variety again.
