Zlatava?
I'm interested in the variety Zlatava, I've just ordered seeds and I'm wondering if anyone has grown this variety? I think it looks striking, love the colour combination but not much mention of taste anywhere or where it is from?
Several sites have it for sale in the UK and Europe, this is the description from Thompson and Morgan NEW in 2013 Tomato 'Zlatava' Cordon Tomato ‘Zlatava’ produces unusual coloured medium tomatoes with an orange skin and bright red flesh when fully ripe. The fruits of this cordon variety each weigh up to 80g with a distinctive, slightly flattened shape, and resist splitting even when over-ripe. Tomato ‘Zlatava’ is best grown in the greenhouse, or a sunny, sheltered spot outdoors. Height: 200cm (79"). Spread: 50cm (20"). http://www.thompson-morgan.com/publi...Code=ts01177TM |

Above is a Google search and after reading and looking at some pictures I can't see much difference between Zlatava and: http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Jaune_Flamm%C3%A9e Both are orange and both have reddish interiors and both are about the same size and shape.Taste differences? Few of the links I looked at even mentioned taste. One site said Russian in origin but Tania doesn't list it but I bet she can find it on some Russian seed site though. Carolyn Carolyn

Thanks Carolyn, I hadn't given Jaune Flammee a thought. I'm thinking the lack of info on taste is not a great sign!
Seemnemaailm lists them, the packet is from Moravoseed, which I think is Czech. http://seemnemaailm.ee/eng/index.php?GID=14378 |

Even before I read the rest of this thread, when I looked at the link of the description in the first post I thought "Jaune Flammee".
While I grow JF almost every year, I haven't paid enough attention to know if it is a "truss" type tho. Carol |

Jay, did you ever grow these? I have a pack and wonder whether to give space to a plant next year.

Vladimir (MrBig46) has grown this variety. He posted pictures and has sent seeds of Zlatava to Tormato's swap. I think there is a pic in the Mystery Mater thread, but may also be shown in his Czech variety thread too.
I have fresh seeds of Jaune Flamme as well, so I may grow them side by side, space permitting, if people are curious as to the difference between them. I did grow JF before, and although it had some red in the center it didn't look the same as Zlatava, to me. |

Thanks, I will go and look for those threads. I agree (from what I have seen) it looks different to Jaune Flamme, a side by side would be a good test.

Hi Maf. I did grow them, well one. To be honest, I struggled to get the pelleted seeds from T&M 'Sure Gro' to germinate and the two that did were slow growing and a bit weedy. I only planted the one and it pretty much struggled all season. The few fruits that ripened were so so, but perhaps not a fair trial when the plant was already doing poorly. I would try them again as I like the colour combination, but from a different seed source and my expectations of taste wouldn't be high! I haven't grown Jaune Flamme for a few years, it's not one of my favourites, but from memory it is the better variety.
Edit to add, I agree a side by side grow out would be helpful. Last edited by Jayc; December 7, 2014 at 03:55 PM. |

Mine are also from T&M but called SowStrong, hope that is not the same thing. Supposed to be 100% natural coating with three layers providing fertiliser and pest and disease resistance. I would have preferred to have just the seeds.
Vladimir (MrBig46) sounded like he liked them so I will try one next spring. |

Oops, I should have checked the packet, mine are SowStrong too. Hopefully I just had a duff lot and yours will do much better.

I haven't kept up on what they are doing with those coated seeds lately. But many of the early versions were what was called "primed". Meaning they were "almost" sprouted then coated. Great if fresh. But most likely dead if the package is old because the seeds ARE pre-sprouted.
Yes I would really prefer non coated if available so I can keep the seeds if needed. Carol |

I was recently reading up about the seed fermentation process, and led me to some research in which seeds of several crops were pre-soaked in Lactobacillus culture, with positive results re plant health vigour and yields.
I have started to wonder whether seeds of different age/source/treatment unknown have ended up being the stragglers or the disease prone ones, cw seed which I know was fermented and unbleached, so maybe some lactobacillus residue present....and maybe not a genetic susceptibility of the variety but just a poorer start. I'm thinking of giving all my seeds a soak in whey before planting next time. |

The pics that started the stampede for seed was of Goldkrone.
Geza from Hungary is the one to thank for supplying enough seed of Goldkrone for about half of the MMMM participants (~50 packs). He also sent some commercial packs of peppers, of which I will look into translating the descriptions. Gary |
