Default Planted Out Today In NorCal - March 3 (pics)

We been having a very warm Spring - the cherry blossoms are out in full bloom, and with the long range forecast for continuing warm weather the rest of March, I decided to take a chance and plant out today:

Early Large Red............................................... ........Vilmorin Dona F1

Goose Creek

Desters

Soren's MarNar

Momotaro.......................................... .................................................. ..Big Beef

Jetsetter......................................... ....................................Supersonic

Better Boy............................................... .........Big Daddy

Park's Whopper........................................... ........BTD Pink

Berkeley Tie-Dye....................................WBF Beauty King

I am trialing a selection of fertilizers to see if I can come up with an alternative to Tomato-tone (more about the trials in another post in a week or so).

So far, the Snow Peas are doing great:

Same with the Sugar Snap Peas:

Looking forward to an interesting Summer.

Raybo

They look nice. All these gardens growing make me inpatient to have the snow melt and to get the garden started.

James,

I am using the "old" Tomato-tone as the gold-standard and comparing it against Fertilome, High Yield Garden, and Green-all to see which one comes closest.

Everything looks so nice. You must be eating peas everyday right now. I love the sweet tender snow peas but they are hard to find in the store. Wish I could just walk out back and pick them. For sure next year I am going to have a pea patch.

Marla,

They do quite well over the Winter here in the San Jose area. Been growing them for the past 4 Winters without climate related issues. If you are in the Southbay area anytime, come on over and pick a bucketful.

Everything looks great Raybo. When is your official last frost date there?
We've had great weather here in NE Florida, except for last night and again tonight we are expecting a hard freeze. I was hoping to set plants out 2 weeks ago but now I'm glad I waited.

Our typical last frost date is about March 15. The long range forecast is showing nights in the upper 40's increasing to 50's by end of March. I have some spares started in case I've guessed wrong.

Looking good Ray! BTW do have any extra Momotaro seedlings around by chance? I ordered a pack from Kitazawa and sowed half the pack and only got one seedling. Thanks!

Raybo,

I also live in the Bay Area (San Jose). Have you grown all your varieties here before? Just wonder for next season if I should give them a shot. I have pink Berkeley tie dye that I am going to try this year. I grew tomatoes last year and had a couple fail on me, yellow submarine(wilt problem) and sunset red horizon(BER entire season). I did pretty well with the others I grew but there is always room for improvement.

Last year I had 6 SWC, best crop of tomatoes I have ever had. I built 12 more this year I was so impressed.

Here's my grow list for this year:

Amish Gold
Black Cherry
Black Ethiopian
Black Krim
Black Prince
Blue Fruit
Brandywine
Cherokee Purple
Clementine
Danko
Dolly Parton
Ester Hess
Fireworks
Fox Cherry Tomato
Galina
Gary'O Sena
Japanese Black Trifele
JD's Special C-Tex
Kellogg's Breakfast
Marianna's Peace
Mr. Brown
Nyagous
Paul Robeson
Perth Pride
Pink Berkeley Tie Dye
Riesentraube
Rio Grande Tomato
Sakharnyi Pudovichok
Snow White Cherry
Sungella Tomato
Sungold F1
Sunray
Sweet Beverly
Tiger-Like
Tiny Tim
wapsipinicon peach

We will see how these do. I think we can grow most tomatoes here with not to many problems, the weather seems to be just right for them.

I planted 8 plants so far, now that I know you have planted out, I am more comfortable planting more, I may wait for the rain to pass this week. Your weather assessment sounded right to me as well.

Thanks for all your great updates, they have helped me with my schedule this year!

Virtex,

I am not aware of any tomato that will not do well in an EarthTainer - I have grown several on your list before.

Just make sure you have protective covers in case we get an enexpected freeze. I have spare containers I can flp on top of the EarthTainers for protection.

Ray, as usual everything looks so great! I look forward to your fertilizer findings. I have gone through all your postings three times over the last few weeks to figure out what your using so I can try to replicate some of your great results in my Earthboxes.

I have so much stuff coming in the mail this week I can open a store lol.

Those peas look amazing! I am trying some this year based on how great yours do.
