Kellogg's Breakfast PL (KBX) Really nice!
This is the first tomato from my Kellogg's Breakfast PL (KBX) plant. Was bigger than I expected. It weighed 22.9 ounces. The color in this pic doesn't do it justice. It was more orange than this.

Kellogg's Breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
Definitely on my list of tomatoes that I like to sit down and eat all by itself. I wasn't aware that there was a PL version. How does it compare? |

Definitely a very tasty variety. It was in a bad spot in
my garden this year, so production was low, but it'll be back next year... in a better spot. Also, as it seems to be pretty stable (after 2-3 years of consistent growing...) I assume it's safe to call it KBX as coined by Martha. Lee

I've been growing the KBX PL version of KB almost since the day Martha discovered it and talk3ed about it on AOL, way back when, and it's the same as RL KB in all ways, but I'm one who really likes PL varieties.
And it's also in the raised bed right now, but this has been an awful year and I have yet to see fruits ripen. Martha kindly sent me 12 plants this past Spring, my choice of varieties, and of course I had to include KBX. For those who don't know, this variety was found and introduced, the RL original, by Darrell Kellogg, hence the name Kellogg as part of the variety name.

Some of the differences I've noted in comparison to RL Kellogg's Breakfast
- NO CRUD in the seedling stage - bigger and sturdier seedlings (RL Kellogg's Breakfast on the L, KBX on the R) - a bit earlier to ripen (75-80 days vs 80-85) - heavier bearing -more disease resistant - plants in the last 2 years have kept going until first frost.

One more to add to my list to acquire.
I probably just glossed right over the PL mention in previous messages. I almost missed it this time, but came back to it in the middle of responding when I realized that my Kellogg's are RL, so this was something different. Just reading too fast, I suppose. |

In a terrible year, I managed to get 3 fruit from it....really enjoyed it, finding it superior to Kellogg's Breakfast (reg leaf) in flavor.

So from what I read here I get the idea that This PL leaf KB is a lower producer than the RL? and maybe a bit better in flavor?

I was wondering about production too. For me, Kelloggs Breakfast RL is one of the few varieties that will produce well in our heat. A lot of PL varieties don't seem to produce as well down south, although they do hold up a little better to foliage disease. If it tastes good and produces well, then I may have to try it.

No, no, no.... I didn't mean to imply KBX is less
productive than Kellogg's Breakfast. ALL of my varieties this year were less productive, so it's just a function of a poor growing year..... Lee

Personally I've had better production from KBX getting 8-10 good sized fruits in crowded conditions.
Of course better production is relative, as every time I've tried to grow RL Kellogg's Breakfast it has succumbed to disease very early on and I may have picked one or two fruits prior to it going down. My current KBX plant was planted very late this year (after 6/1) and not in the best of spots. So far given me 3 fruits and has 8 more coming on. It seems to have withstood the 12" deluge Ernesto dumped on us 6 days ago.

[Update] This is certainly a very sharing group. Thanks for the offers I've received from multiple people! gardenmama is sending me some. I think I will need to increase my seed-saving so that I can share back with the group in future years. |
