Working on Micro Tom cross
Hey all working on crossing Micro-Tom, an extreme dwarf pimpinellifolium and Indigo Rose, and was wondering besides the one Sungold cross I have seen, ...has anyone else here played with Micro Tom in a cross experiment? I also may need a few people for some grow outs in the near future...if anyones interested..I still have a ways to go before that happens, but just a heads up.

I don't think Micro-Tom is a currant variety as you wrote above and as indicated at the link above. Very short, yes, but not a currant as far as I know and not a true Dwarf and especially since it was developed by Dr. Jay Scott in FL. Hope that helps, Carolyn

Hey Carolyn,
Been off the radar for a while due to a nasty divorce, hope you are doing ok....No I know Micro Tom's lineage...I am crossing it with an extreme dwarf pimp from TGRC AND the OSU Indigo Rose...I am quite a ways into my project, but just wondering if anyone else has toyed with micro tom before...I know the japanese use it as a test subject for mutations, as it grow quickly and is small...just curious...god I hope no one crosses it with Delicious or something huge LOL...Take care friend. PS I know it will taste like ★★★...but should be pretty and productive.

OK, a dwarf currant from TGRC and Indigo Rose. What do you expect from that cross, or hope for, I should say. Glad to see you back UNDER the radar. Carolyn

Prolly wrote it wrong...it's a three way cross...but what I expect will be a small pimp with blue/dark purple fruits...I have the pimp cross...just working on the Indigo rose....it's gonna take a lot more plants...but hopeful....It won't be any good taster...but should look nice and fun...take care,
Jon

Not Micro-Tom but I have made crosses with other extreme dwarfs. The F2s are 4" tall and flowering under fluorescent lights.

Nice Cris! I am growing indoors as well.. Just don't hear much about really small plants much...extreme dwarfs are kinda fun, sure don't take up as much room as an indoor brandywine lol.

I'll probably do a blog post when I see the fruit. I'm looking for striped in the first cross. I've got about 10-12 F1's of micros to grow this year.

Here is one of the crosses I made last year. An F2 plant, 5" tall, flowering in a 4" pot.

Hey John, great to see you back! Sounds like a fun cross. I don't do intentional crosses, but am always happy to grow some out. Specially since yours sounds like a small guy I could fit in pots around the yard since space is tight. Let me know when you are looking for growers

Will do Antoniette! Thanks for welcoming me back....been a bit rough but I'll be ok...I am getting more into the extreme dwarfs now, as my space is much more limited than it used to be, and yes these guys are so small...you really can have a ton of fun little plants...just had one of my extreme pimps come up with three cotyledons! Last time I had one come up with multiples...it was 4 and didnt survive...this guy is really stunted, with a thicker stem, and is starting to produce tiny leaves...so maybe I'll get a fun freak to take care of..lol...the new batch of microtoms are under the lights and looking good, though they are only two weeks up...Chris I would love to own a couple of your F2's sometime if willing to part with seeds...that is a nice looking plant!...take care all!
Jon

Would love to send you some seeds. The more growers the better! If you can wait a month I should have some F3 seed from those flowering now, I'll send you a PM.
I find it hard to tell determinate from indeterminate in these tiny plants! Quote:

I always say there is a tomato for everyone. In an apartment, or in a house, anyone can grow a tomato plant, and yes, the little guys are perfect for small spaces and allow folks the joy of growing their own. Good luck guys!
