Determinate?
I planted out New Big Dwarf and noticed the plant is "determinate". Do they really all ripen at once? I have never grown a determinate tomato plant.
If so, what a bummer! |

Interesting, the tomatobase says it's an indeterminate dwarf?
I have several growing but no fruit yet. |

i have one seedling started for this season. i'm not sure if its going to make it into the garden or even a container but now i'm curious whether its determinate or indeterminate. i checked the site i ordered from and they dont specify.

Tree-type:
One class of tomatoes exhibits characteristics of both determinate and indeterminate types. Historically they are called "tree-type". this is from victory seed which is where i got mine from

I never got to knowingly eat one but I grew about 50 of them one year. I would get home and all the tomatoes would be picked and I would have no idea what plants they came from. No big deal I liked whatever they were. Worth |

No guarantees it's still the same, I guess, but the original catalog (from here) has the line, "last season it was among the first to show ripe fruit, and continued in bearing until killed by frost."
I know it's not always as clear cut as "one crop or bears until killed"... I am hopeful someone knows. Going to plant mine anyway, but since I share with a gardening buddy, it will be good to know. |

Tatiana's tomato site says NBD is INDETERMINATE! I ordered them from Tomato Growers Supply. They are lush with a tree trunk like stem. I sure hope they'll grow all season as I really planted them for BLT's and want more than a couple. I have no room to freeze them...........
If anybody can shed some light I would really appreciate it! Janie |

The general info is that det ripen fruits over a short period of time. Some do and some don't. I've not grown New Big Dwarf so can't speak to that one.

What happens when you plant a determinate plant that is already blooming? I'm hoping they will bloom more and the fruit set will not be limited to the blooms that were on the plant when it is planted?

I got my NBD seeds from Victory Seeds a few years ago, their current website does not say what they are, but I believe mine were indets, at least that's how they grew for me.

My determinates put on a few blooms at first, then a bunch a few weeks later. Don't know if that is usual or not.

My NBD acts like an indeterminate....keeps fruiting until the plant dies
