My little plot of Spuds
Here's my little plot of spuds I'm growing this year.
Yukon Gold and Azul Toro. So far so good for these, although they didn't flower very long. 1 week and all the flowers are now gone. I've also got 2 other Azul Toro growing in the neighboring bed. Apparently, I didn't dig all of the tubers up and a couple overwintered and popped up when the weather warmed up. It'll be interesting to see how those turn out. I had one AT that was 12oz. in size from the fall harvest! Lee

So lush and green! They could be an ornamental.
I saw sweet potato flats for sale at HD today... forgive a dumb question, but do the specialty tomatoes I read about here grow vines or have flowers? Tl |

Thanks Lee, for showing the plot of AZUL TORO. The potatoes in your picutre...the ones on the right are Azul Toro vines. I recognize the slight wavy leaf pattern. Yes, this variety won't bloom for long...and for most folks it won't bloom at all since it is strongly determinate.
The name AZUL TORO was taken from the direction of the cross made in 1995 between first year seedlings Negro Y Azul and Kern Toro. The parents of Negro Y Azul were Lenape and Red Regis and the parents for Kern Toro were Fontenot and NorDonna. I have some Azul Toro's growing for the third year in a row in three inch containers with the same soil from Feb of 2011. They are very stress resistant. |

Harvested 12+ pounds of the Yukon Golds this weekend. Mostly 6~8oz spuds with 4 1/2 pounds coming off one plant.
The vines hadn't died yet, but the potatoes looked ready upon inspection, so I went ahead and dug 'em up. Probably good timing, as one deep tuber had a wire worm trying to bore into it..... I'll give the Azul Toro's another week or so before digging those up. Lee

Here's what I got out of a harvest of Azul Toro yesterday.
This was just 1, maybe 1 1/2 plants as I may have gotten some of the neighbor plant's runners. Nearly two pounds total. Love these guys for roasting on the grill with a little dill or rosemary and a touch of EVO! Lee
