Arkansans or Zone 7/8 individuals starting seeds for a fall crop?
Hello
I have my first ever order of seeds coming in from Wild Boar Farms. I am a lover of Cherokee Purple and I read so many good reviews on the WBF Pink Berkeley Tie Dye! I just can't wait until next year to plant them. Hopefully my seeds will arrive this week. I was thinking about starting them for a fall crop, which I have never done before. Is anyone in Arkansas or zones 7-8 starting seeds now/soon for fall harvest? The PBTD shows days to maturity at about 65-75 days. Will I be able to get a satisfactory crop? I also purchased Indigo Apple, Pork Chop, and Black and Brown Boar. I am tempted to also start the Indigo Apple for a fall crop as well. |

I think, that 65-75 days to maturity means from the come into blossom. You must add about forty days. Than it is 105-115 days.

You will have plenty of time to make a decent crop of both CP and BTDP. I grow both every year and am in zone 8b and have had success setting them out as late as mid August. If you have an early fall then that can mess you up but other than that get them planted and set out as soon as possible.
BTDP is one of the better fall tomatoes because it still ripens well when the cooler days get here. Another black that does well then is Carbon. Bill |

Bill,
I have Cherokee Purple growing fruit now. I hope to have a ripe one soon! I am so glad to hear that the BTDP will ripen well in the fall. So when you say you set out BTDP as late as mid August, about how old are your transplants? 6 weeks? If the seeds come in on time, I had planned to start the seeds indoors and then transplant them where my garlic is when it is ready to harvest. Another thought I had was to direct sowing the BTDP in a few 10-15 gallon fabric containers. |
