German tomatoes named Boar - Why??

Does anyone know why there are a number of German tomatoes named Boar, like red Boar, Yellow Boar, etc etc, why name tomatoes after a wild pig, I cant see the connection myself- but its catchy to say the least .

Albeit the fact that I believe that some of them are considered to be very good tomatoes.

I think that may be because Brad, at Wild Boar Farms in California, originally grew, named, then sent those varieties over to Reinhardt Kraft.

No- it seems that the red Boar and other colours of it seem to originate from American stock after all.

Which rather destroys the mental image I had in my mind of wild Boar charging about in German forests ( Black Forest perhaps) and occasional emerging from the forest to raid local peoples gardens and eat the tomatoes and later depositing -said seed, in dollops all over the forest, which later developed into tomato plants and crossed themselves to mix several varieties thus creating a new variety,


I once saw some tremendous tomato plants growing all over a patch of ground at a local Sewage proccessing works, and was told by the workmen that they were from tomatoes that people had eaten and survived the complete journey- to fourish and grow there.

They said to me gather as many ripe tomatoes as you want- but I quickly declined the offer "organic though they were" 8)
