Default Seeds sprouting INSIDE tomato

We recently moved to Oregon, so I'm not getting a garden this year. So my Hubby goes to the market for a few items and comes home with one of those 'tomatoes on the vine' things. Three tasteless wanna be tomatoes. Tonight I sliced the last one. Inside, the seeds were SPROUTING. The seeds closest to the stem end had started to sprout. There were tiny little leaves, a tiny stem and a little hair-like root! Weird. Has anyone ever seen this before?..... Pigz

Yeah, a few times. Also store bought, in the winter. They tasted terrible.

Ditto for me too except they were freebies from a friend during summer.

With shipped in winter tomatoes stored in the cold, for sure, but also with homegrown gold/red bicolors from time to time since the flesh is very soft and they rot easily.

It has never happened to me. However, it has been reported to me and it came up in the form of a question at one of my talks years ago. Basically the question was is it safe to eat? My response was I wouldn't eat the sprouts. The unaffected parts of the tomato would probably be okay to eat, but I wouldn't because it probably just wouldn't be that tasty.

I took the person's email and researched it. The general consensus matched my answer.

Have seen that a lot with bell peppers - so often in fact it is not even weird to me
On top of that, the little 'extra' usually tastes very good. Now THAT is a bit weird ...
