Default My Second Largest Tomato's CC " and approx Weight Revealed.

Yes, that's right, my second largest. My largest is also still growing and is larger than the one I'm showing here.

The largest one's weight along with this one will be certified at the regional office of the Pennsylvania Department of Weights and Measures when both are finished growing.

It's a Mega Marv and is currently at 22 1/2 inches in diameter with some significant bottom lobes which most likely will skew the estimated weight upwards.

This places it's current weight at approx. 4 LBS 4 OZ. not counting the bottom lobes.

I took the measurements and this photo approx five minutes ago.

Congrats on surpassing your goal for this year- twice so far! It's a monster! How long do you have to keep it before it goes on display?

Thank you Kath!

I'm entering it along with a couple of others in the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth's online early tomato contest.
Once it's weight is officially certified it will then be entered with this organization.

They have a weigh off in Altoona each year in October that focuses on giant pumpkins with a side contest for giant tomatoes.

Mine will be far too early this year for an in person weigh off in Altoona so I am entering them early online. :O)

Amazing! Just curious, when do they weigh the most? When they are first blushing, fully colored up, or somewhere in between? I have noticed that they don't weigh as much once they have been sitting on the counter even for a day... or is it my imagination?

Hi Robin. :O)

I will pick this and the others as soon as I detect any blushing no matter how slight.

Once blushing occurs the tomato will grow no more.

I will then weigh it on my own scale then store it in a small refrigerator at 50F.
It will remain approx. the same weight for around 48 hrs before the inevitable decline occurs in weight due to ripening.

It's not your imagination Robin, if I allowed the one I showed here to remain on the kitchen counter at room temperature it would decline rapidly in weight due to the ripening process.

Very interesting...I was imagining various 1 day events during the season and was wondering how that would work!

Best of luck to you!

What a tomato! How proud and excited you must be. You have done a great job in surpassing your goal. You are definitely going to give them some competition.

I know how you feel. I used to grow giant pumpkins.
