Help using/sorting tomatobase?
I usually consider myself fairly tech savvy but Im flummoxed. I want to view the database in spreadsheet view and to sort first by one category then another, like you might in excel. Id like to see tomatoes that are either dwarf or det AND salad size, and i want to view those results in table form.
as far as i can tell some of the listed queries show in table format, like this one on early tomatoes but most of the others link to an alpha listing by names based on one character, so all cherry toms but then id have to click through the names to see which were short varieties. Am i missing something? is there a way to select mult characteristics at once or to force the reports to show as tables (ie like the early listing but w/o limiting to earlies) Any guidance appreciated! |

Something like this?
http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/w...table+smwtable I hate Semantic search. No time right now for a more elegant solution, sorry. Edit... okay, this should be neater. http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/w...smwtable&eq=no You can use any property you'd like and it seems to default to intersecting. I really am terrible at Semantic search, so I've never gotten any farther than this. It's ridiculously powerful for getting the information back out but hard to find documentation. Hope that helps! The sad but truthful answer is "trial and error".
Fortunately, I've had reason to search other wikis that use semantic search, so I knew the basic structure. I'm sure there's an easy way to search for, say, a category and two properties, or just two properties, but the special query function works well. |

tlintx you are amazing! That is just right and in a zillion years I would never have found it. Having seen you do it, I can replicate. woot!

emcd124,
Some of the data at Tatiana's TOMATObase is showing in table format, and some are simple alphabetical lists because I made them like that Semantic data queries are much heavier on performance compared to the queries based on categories or the queries that use native Mediawiki format (like the basic alphabetical lists). For example, running a query over the entire data set at TOMATObase based on all the semantic properties will be very slow, and it negatively impact response time for other users. This is why there are no 'pre-build' queries or reports like that provided.

No problem
One just has to be careful not to overuse the semantic search feature. If you think there are some useful reports that would be beneficial for folks, please post here, and I will do my best to make it happen. Tatiana

I would love to see a table view of all dwarfs and micro (mini?) dwarfs, with fruit color, fruit size, fruit shape, etc. I've gone through all the dwarfs (from the popular shortcut) one by one, and by color is useful, but to know the fruit size and color would be very helpful! Not sure it's possible, but it'd be nice to narrow down just by ones available commercially, too?

This is the best I can do . Does it work better for you?
http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/D...atoes_by_Color Unfortunately, commercial availability is not a semantic property, so it cannot be included into the search. Making it a semantic property is a bit problematic, as I have no reliable way to know at any given time which variety out of 4,000 is still commercially available. And even if I had the info at my fingertips, updating the database every time a variety becomes commercially available or when it gets dropped would be time consuming.
