Purple Haze
Fusion, are you going to have Purple Haze seedlings this year? Does anyone have Purple Haze seed?
I just saw your website link from another page about Purple Haze. Is all your contact info still current? Thanks, Don

Darrel Jones is who I get Purple Haze from, I think he's Fusion but not sure. His plants are top notch and ready to go into the garden. I've never seen Purple Haze in seed form, but have grown it from Darrel the last 3 seasons.

http://www.kdcomm.net/~tomato/releases/ Above is a link to his released and upcoming possible varieties and you can see that the construction of Purple Haze F1 was and would complicated to do again to get F1 seeds. I'll let Darrel take it from there, and I didn't go to Darell's site to see if he's listing Purple Haze F1 plants for this year so anyone interested should probably do that first. I just did go to Darrles site and yes, he's offering the F1 plant for $6/plant but then the link takes you to Tania's site where more info is given about how to dehybridize it as Tania and many others have done. I was offering Zachary in my seed offer and it was an F9 one dehybridized by Steve of Heritage seeds, Carolyn

Thanks for the info Carolyn, I haven't met one of Keith's tomatoes I did not like, Purple Haze is on my plant every season you can list. Every year I also plant 3 to 4 dehybridized versions to see if any are close to the hybrid. I always get either a red or pink, large saladette, very vigorous disease free plant. The Purple Haze flavor and texture aren't present, disappointment sets in, Keith and Darrel save the day. I'll be placing my order with Darrel soon. I will relish this fabulous tomato every season I can, it's a very special hybrid. THANKS KEITH and DARREL!!!

I have 1150 seed of Purple Haze so there will be plenty of plants.
I also have a question. If you could buy Purple Haze seed at 5 seed for $10 would you be interested? I'm not saying they are available, but if I can talk Keith into letting a few go........ Last edited by Fusion_power; February 9, 2014 at 10:38 PM. |

A few years go Laurel said she could not get more F1 seeds from Keith since heapparently had runout, my words/ So if he was out and had to reconstruct the hybrid, how does he know that what he selected is the exact same F1 Purple Haze that he first offered which to me might be difficult, and see the comments Keith made to Tania in the link below about thatre different shapes. I could ask him myself but you are here now. Steve at Heritage seeds is offering Zachary, an F9 of the original, the first several F's were done by Ray Newstead in CA, and Steve did the rest. Steve had sent me seeds of Zachary which I offered in my seed offer, now closed .I was surprised at that only b'c I think Ray and Steve did just one growout each year, possibly two in some yars so that would say it was almost 10 years ago that Keith first offered his F1 Purple Haze. I didnt go to Keith's Recent release link to see if any dates of introduction were there for any of them. so by myself can't confirm what I said in the above paragraph I just remembered that someone at GW had asked if Darrel was selling plants of the hybrid, he is, at $6/plant and when I clicked on his link it took me to the following page at Tania's site, where it was said that Keith gave all of his F1 seed to Laurel, amongst other tidbits about it. Tania received F2 seeds for it in 2008. http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/Purple_Haze Carolyn

Carolyn, Keith has both parents of Purple Haze, it is just very difficult to get many crosses to take. The female parent is a high flavor line derived from a cross of Brandywine and Cherokee Purple. It does not set many fruit to start with and is not particularly easy to make crosses with. He maintains the female parent line by re-selecting for flavor when he has to grow it out.
From discussions with Keith just over a month ago, he had at least 3000 Purple Haze seed this year and was planning on offering some to Laurel. I purchased 1000 on a contract grow out for a local business. I am going to see if he would be interested in selling a few seed direct, but no promises, he will have to be the one to decide. I don't recall for sure when Keith first offered Purple Haze, but I think it was 2007 that I first sold plants. I would have to check that this is correct. Darrell, I think I'd rather buy the plant. By the time I factor in the cost of raising them, and that some probably won't germinate, it would be more reliable to just buy the plants.
Does anyone know how I can edit the title of this post so it doesn't say PUrple, and change it to Purple?

I will pay a dollar a seed for Purple Haze F1 seeds if I know that the appropriate portion of the sales will go toward autism research and development same as the plants.

I'd also buy seed, very happy to hear that it will be available from Darrel. It's one of the few hybrids I have in my garden, just love it.

I am pretty sure that Purple Haze was 1st offered in 2006, maybe 2005. But for some reason 2006 is sticking in my mind.
