Default Found something at walmart.

The other day I dropped by to pick up some stuff and wondered around the garden area. And lo there was in the veggie section an Indigo Rose. Is it worth the three or four dollars? how are the flavor the heat tolerance on these?

The flavor isn't spectacular but isn't horrible either. Is it worth $3 or$4 dollars. It depends on how bad you want to grow a blue skinned tomato. I'm cheap so I'm never going to pay 3 or 4 dollars.

I'll probably take that as a lead. I fall into that category myself so I'll probably wait until I can get it as a trade or maybe when I'm buying things to round off a dollar amount the next time I buy seeds.

We grew it 2 years ago - nice to show off your blue tomato, but taste was not impressive.

Yes, there are a lot of better tasting blue tomatoes out there. This thread has a lot of the story, and makes for interesting reading.

Thanks for that. I wasn't aware of the depth of breeding of that line. And also I find it iinteresting that everyone who was growing it out now has something that is not exactly as original OSU strain because of the early F generation. Or at least I think it's not based off what I gleamed from that thread.

Indigo Rose definitely has a distinct taste from most tomatoes. I find I really like it, but many seem to be less impressed.

For me, the plant has had the unusual growth characteristic of having no side-branches at all. The result is that in my garden I plant more plants closer together than for other varieties I grow.

3 bucks is not a lot of money and you can try the variety for yourself to see if you like it. bonus, if you do like it you can save your own seed so your 3 dollars really becomes a good deal.
go for it

Epsilon, am curious to know if your wal-mart carry Bonnie Plants or some other brand?

Karen I enjoy your posts but I thought I would offer some insight about the $3 comment. the amount of money for something is a relative thing based on your circumstances, which could be very limited income or the time of the month relative to your SS deposit It can even be relative to the part of the country you live in.

On the other hand I feel much like Doug9345 at this point in my life. I have been on both sides of the doolar sign and can see somewhat better now.

Keep your comments coming. By the way, I did'nt find blue tomatoes that great.

with no malice a forethought,

I think I'll hold off on indigo rose, As last year I was actually looking forward to growing Haley's purple comet.

For me three dollars is an arbitrary number that I have to rationalize it's expenditure. Marketing turned me into an extremely utilitarian person and I have trouble justifying any purchase that doesn't become a net gain(this gets on my nerves really bad because sometimes even I want to make impulse purchases).

And seeing as that most people seem to have an indifferent opinion on taste I think I can hold of to a later date.

I thought they were gorgeous, bought some at a farm stand. Planned to grow them - until I tasted them. Only tomato I have literally spit out. Shame, as they are so lovely looking.

I was going to post that indigo rose makes a unique ornamental, and that may be the best reason for growing it. The plant, loaded with those black balls of fruit really is stunning. I'm not a big fan of their flavor, but I'll keep growing them for awhile, just for pretty!
