Tumbling Tom in hanging basket
I was in Canadian Tire today when I saw a man with a cart containing two containers of tomato plants absolutely covered in flowers. Intrigued, I just HAD to know which variety they were, so I tracked them down and found two white hanging-basket sized containers, one with a label that said Tumbling Tom, a red cherry.
Unfortunately, I have absolutely no room for another tomato plant or I would have snatched one up. Do they really do ok in such a small container???? What do they taste like? Linda |

Yes they do, however, this year I tried 100's and 1000's and like the structure better, the taste is better too. The bad part; everyone got one but me.

I sold two tumbling toms in hanging baskets this morning, one red and the other yellow. I have a husband and wife as market customers who think that they are the greatest thing in the world. They don't mind having to water them every day, and they think they taste great.
My own opinion is that the fruit are awful (the yellow is better, at least edible), and the hanging basket is a dumb idea. It needs to be taken down and dunked in water every day to grow well, at least in hot summer weather. Most hanging basket customers are older people and don't want to lift anything heavy. They want to just squirt it with a hose, and I can't see these plants doing very well that way. It's more of a novelty than a smart way to container garden, but I grow a few of them each year, mostly for the one couple who seem to get so much joy out of them. They come back every Saturday morning all summer to tell me how well their hanging basket tomatoes are doing. Last edited by Cole_Robbie; May 31, 2014 at 03:21 PM. |

Hi Linda,
I like Tanias' Anmore dewdrop and Anmore treasures. Both OP tumblers she stabilized herself. Last year I grew a basket with both of those plus tumbling tom yellow in it together. Pink, red and yellow in one basket looks nice once it gets going. used a 16 inch basket and it was about four feet across at the bottom and very heavy so needed a strong support. I would guess about 500 tomatoes from it for the season. I have seeds for all three if you want to try them for next year. Karen |

Hi Karen,
That must have been very impressive when they all ripened! Your picture of the flowering basket is lovely! Many thanks for your offer . I'd love to try them next year and will PM you. Cheers, Linda Quote:

Karen very kindly shared seeds with me and I germinated all three and am growing them on the windowsill with supplementary grow lights in the evenings.
I am thrilled to announce that Tumbling Tom Yellow is the first to have flower buds just 27 days from germination! Thanks again Karen, Linda |

Karen,
They do bottle that tomato plant smell - google "Tomato by Demeter" - I don't know if it actually smells like a real plant, but it might! Lyn |

I grow red and yellow tumbling toms strictly for decorations. They are gorgeous when elevated in a container and cascade downward. The reds taste horrible, but the yellows are pretty good. I'm thinking of replacing them next season with Lime Green Salad which is also very attractive in containers and has the added value of great taste.
