Just crowing a little...first tomatoes..Stupice

Another successful year with the first red tomatoes in June in Zone 5. Started these from seed 3/15, and planted out under protection 5/1, protection off 5/15.

Just curious if anybody else has had a ripe tomato in June in Z5 started from seed 3/15 or later?

Zone 7 BUT I had mine come out about 2 weeks ago. Great tasting tomato! Kids fav too! wished it produced more though.

I'm zone 6 and my start date was same as yours but I couldn't put them out up here till May 15th (which was early as the old saw says not till after May 24th weekend). I have Stupices with tomatoes on them but they are still green and a couple of weeks away. Ditto for Black Cherry. My first Indigo apple is bluing up nicely so its about a week away. I have toms growing on most of my plants at this point but they are pretty tiny in most cases and probably a month away for the mid-sized ones.

I did harvest some nice and ripe Micro Toms but they are more of a novelty at 5" tall and though they did go into tonight's bruschetta they don't taste as good as a Stupice would. But they're red and I'm happy.

Nice tomatoes in the pic. Can't wait for mine to catch up. Usually my Tiny Tims are ready around now but they had disease problems early on which de-foliated them for the most part and so slowed their production down. Pete

My one containerized tomato plant is a grafted Stupice. I put it out 30 May on a South facing balcony. This plant has exploded to at least double. I have tomatoes and more bloom cluster coming right along.

It's my first time with either grafted or Stupice but so far I'm impressed. Once I get a security key I'll be able to up load photos. I was amazed after looking at a photo of the plant taken when I first set it out.

I'm happy to hear they taste good as well.

That's amazing. I'm in zone 7 of nyc and your plant out schedule is about mine but I don't have any big (how big is the stupice?) tomatoes turning color yet. For me its sungold and Maglia Rosa.
When you plant out, did you harden off too? or is that part of the protection?

luigiwu, Stupice are small (NOT cherries) tomatoes, maybe 3-4 ounces. Planted out May 1st with Wall o Waters for protection, which also took care of the hardening off process. I'll add that I grow in containers, and container plants seem to initially grow faster than in-ground.

So I'm in zone 5 and only planted June 1. I started seed March 23 rd which was too early for here. I only plant in containers and didn't think I could plant earlier even with protection. I'm curious about your hardening off process. How did you deal with it, just using WOW's? I'm getting fruit but nowhere you are! Congrats! Looks delicious. Been debating about trying Stupice.

Your tomato plant must have had all favorable conditions to thrive and grow very fast.

Stupice is a great early tomato!

Sharon, yes the WoWs were all that was needed to harden off. I take them from inside, and plant them in the container and add a WoW, and that's it. It really saves a lot of work...no 'tomato two-step.' You could easily put yours out the first or second week of May and leave the WoW on for a couple of weeks, and you should be set. I always have to keep an eye out for a late frost or two. The photo is from last year.

Nice photo. Makes me feel good and jealous at the same time. I too want to grow Stupice soon. Seems as though it might be as early as Sun Gold. It always seems too long between my Sun Gold's and a more substantial sized different tasting tomato.
