Default Early tomatoes in Tatiana's garden 2014

As this is the last day of July, I thought I'd post the results of the 2014 season for early varieties trials.

We ended up with about 350 varieties planted this year, and 55 varieties ripened early.

As a reference point:

My definition of early is a tomato that ripened the first fruit on the vine in July.
Mid-season - 1st fruit ripened in August to mid-September
Late season -1st fruit ripened in late September to mid-October.

We pull out plants in mid October or late September in the bad (LB) years.

All the early varieties listed below are growing in our container garden, with a rare exceptions that are marked with *** (these were under plastic cover). Yes, they are in pots . The container garden gets sunshine approximately from noon to 6 pm in May/June/July, and from 1 pm to 6 pm in August or later. The plants were set out from early to mid June this year. The container garden was the last planted. So I am truly impressed with the performance!

So here you go! You can look up all these varieties (and pictures) at http://tatianastomatobase.com

Hi Vladimir,

We planted in early to mid June. Seed sown between 3rd week of February and mid March.

Wow, we are on the same parallel!
If we get 26C + rain, our non-covered tomatoes will be dead within a week due to late blight. So I am very happy to have dry spell here in Anmore

Our potatoes were killed by late blight after the rain we had July 19-23. We had to pull them right away. Another rain would have been deadly!

The weather is way too hot for our area. In-ground tomatoes are wilting during the day, as they have not been watered in the last month, and I have no intention to give them any water in August. Only peppers and cukes are getting some water in our garden now. And plants in containers, of course!

Cheers,
Tatiana

Wonderful Tania! It is unusually humid and hot here as well. Typically we have dry heat here on the prairies and I am on high alert for blight which is not generally a problem here. |I am seeing and pruning out some yellow and spotty leaves here and there but no serious problem yet. I sure hope the humidex drops back into a normal range. heat is OK but I like a dry heat that doesn't favor fungus.
Best wishes for a lovely midseason and later season crop as well as your extensive list of earlies!

Large oval pink cherry with a very cute tip. Was send to me as an OP by a seed collector in Quebec.

Hi Karen,

I hope your season will go well! If late blight is not a usual problem in your area, you should be quite safe.

Even with the dry heat we have here the dews are so heavy that everything in the garden is dripping water before noon (as we do not get much morning sun here due to the large trees). This is why our potatoes never survive past mid-July.

Tatiana
