What is a Mennonite Tomato?

I've seen some Mennonite tomato varieties advertised online, but
I don't know what that means. I found a lot of information online like...

Mennonite tomatoes like:

A PH of 5.5 to 7.5
Minimum soil temperature for optimal germination, 12°C / 54°F.
Open pollinated
Good for most US zones

Nothing tells me what a Mennonite tomato is.

There is mention of Amish at some of the seed selling sites. I hope I am not breaking any rules here by asking this question. If so, please terminate this post.

At a guess, it would have an origin tied to the Mennonite or Amish Mennonite communities that are found in North America or Europe.

But not just tomatoes are traced to the Mennonite communities. I helped distribute through trades a pole bean with Amish Mennonite origins in Waterloo County a few years ago that was quite rare at the time. As a result of those trades there are at least 3 seed vendors on this site carrying the Waterloo Country Mennonite Pole Bean (aka Purple Stripes).

I agree with Zana. Variety that was established or attributed to Mennonite farmers or family. Should not need any special soil or weather conditions over any other variety. Just a name.

Okay, I finally found an answer and you guys are right.

About Old German Tomato: The Old German multicolor beefsteak tomato dates back to the mid 1800's in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, a Mennonite heirloom.

For a very long time I've had a Mennonite friend, Jim Weaver, in Kutztown PA.

I don't know if he has a website but here's a Google search with lots of links to his Meadow View Farm.

Jim and family grew any and all kinds of tomatoes and peppers, etc., regardlss of origin, I visited his farm.

I don't remember any that he IDed as being Mennonite in origin, although there certainly could be since the Amish and Mennonite folks who came fromEurope certainly brought some seeds with them.

When I re Googled I saw mention of the variety Tiffen Mennonite, which I've grown, but don't have time to look at other links.

I grew Tiffen Mennonite about 5 years ago, and my notes say it was very good, and somewhat similar to Earl's Faux (which I do love) and grew both that same year. I will have to pull out those TM seeds and grow it again thanks to this thread.

The simple naming of a certain theologic group connected to tomatoes is certainly not a so called breaking of the rules.
Carolyn has done a lot of consulting for authentic Shaker[ I think] gardens.
But at the time too humble to say so.
I too have heard of tbese tomatoes but have no idea what they are.

Thank you Worth. I don't know the history of Tomatoville, but you must be a cornerstone.

For those who might not know what a cornerstone is, Defined as:

I wouldn't call myself a corner stone but I know what the rules are and the intent and meaning behind them.

A lot of forums go down the drain that dont abide by or have them.
