Thank you! Choosing a military career was among the best decisions I ever made in my life. Here's a link to a Veterans slide show that I received from Military.com:

To those south of the border celebrating Veteran's Day and those throughout the Commonwealth celebrating Remembrance Day, take time to remember the sacrifices of so many for the those they left behind. Take time to thank all the veterans to know or meet. Take time to appreciate what we have and what so many still do not have.

To all those that served, you have my heartfelt and deep thanks. To those that lost family and friends in conflicts near and far, recent and long ago, my deepest sympathies.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies grow,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lest we forget.

9,000 Fallen Soldiers Etched into the Sand on Normandy Beach to Commemorate Peace Day
by Christopher Jobson on September 25, 2013

This past weekend British artists Jamie Wardley and Andy Moss accompanied by numerous volunteers, took to the beaches of Normandy with rakes and stencils in hand to etch 9,000 silhouettes representing fallen people into the sand. Titled The Fallen 9000, the piece is meant as a stark visual reminder of the civillians, Germans and allied forces who died during the D-Day beach landings at Arromanches on June 6th, 1944 during WWII. The original team consisted of 60 volunteers, but as word spread nearly 500 additional local residents arrived to help with the temporary installation that lasted only a few hours before being washed away by the tide. I have gotten into the habit of lighting a candle on November 10th to celebrate the USMC's Birthday. Some would say that is very strange for a Canuck/Brit. But I have and had many USMC friends and even family. Some were sadly lost in service to their country. Others thankfully returned home, mostly whole and healthy.

So to the USMC Veterans here, I wish a belated Happy 239th Birthday to the Corps.

The best thank you to all who served is for folks to take care with the freedoms we protect for you. I get a bit misty when I go vote and see all the other folks there exercising that right. I wonder about those who don't vote.

I spent 3 years in England and know how passionate the Brits are about their men and women in uniform.

From those of us who have served and all who have fallen, and especially all who continue to serve, we want you to know that our daily prayer goes something like this.

"Please God, give us a world where this job in this uniform is not needed. Amen"

To all my former and present brothers and sisters in uniform on this special day, " OOH RAH !!!"

It is my fervent hope that all those who have uttered that prayer have their prayers come true, forever more.

I second that.

Same thoughts as those who have already posted above.

For years we were told that my mother's cousin, Harry Carlson, was killed on a ship by a strafer plane in the Pacific as he was preaching, no he wasn't a real minister, but he spoke well. But my sister in law found that he was killed on Iwo Jima.

And I know my maternal great grandfather fought in the Civil War.

On Monday the local K thru 12 school presented a program honoring veterans, active or not, and had several there from WWII and Korea , etc.,who spoke to the students. The comment in the paper was that in recent times that Veterans day was often glossed over, but that's not true these days.

Especially good for the younger folks who have no real appreciation for the service that all veterans gave that gave us freedom.

Some of you remember Veterans day with the same poignancy that I do: about 1/4th (487 individuals) of my high school graduation class never returned from Vietnam.
