Questions about my tomatoes
Below are pictures of tomatoes from two of my plants. I'm trying to figure out what they are.
Plant #1. This one was supposed to be Everglades but Everglades tomatoes are smaller than a quarter. The only seed I have that could be close to this is Striped Sweetheart but I didnt start any of those but maybe a seed mixup. I dont know what color these will be at maturity because none have ripened yet. There are about 20 tomatoes on the plant and it is PL. The plant is planted in the ground and very healthy and about 3 feet tall but I think will get much taller with time. Any ideas what I have here? Here is the plant... Plant #2 This one is supposed to be Surpriz but these tomatoes have dark stripes (antho? ) and the Surpriz I looked up don't show that. I did not start any antho type seeds this crop. In the spring I grew Indigo Rose and Indigo Blueberries but didnt like the taste so didnt grow anything like that this time. Plant is RL (i think) and not super bushy. This one is also planted in the ground and doing well. My main question on this one is if Surpriz should have these characteristics on the tomato... the dark dark stripes. Thanks Ginny Last edited by Fiishergurl; November 11, 2014 at 10:30 AM. |

The top plant is regular leaf, so it's not Striped Sweetheart.
I can't comment on what you might have for either one other than that. Good luck! Lee

Plant #1.
This one was supposed to be Everglades but Everglades tomatoes are smaller than a quarter. At our place in Everglades City we have a lot of Everglades Wild Cherrys and I have never seen one that color/striped/size.So it would be safe to say that it is not a EWCherry, unless you crossed with a Berkley(accidental),from in your past posts you have shown and wrote about.

Whatever these two plants are I'm loving the looks of these. So pretty. Thanks for the input. I will update as they ripen as to what the color and taste end up being. Ginny |

This is my first year growing and I didnt grow Everglades or PBTD until this fall. The seeds for both were straight out of the package. but i did apparently get seeds mixed up. I thought I was careful but I started about 40 different types and have found about 4 so far that dont match what they should be including these two and the ugly ripe/pbtd mixup that I figured out. So thats a 10% error rate and I thought I was being careful.... lol. The only thing I grew from my own saved seed is an f3 red golf ball sized tomato saved from f2 plant this past spring that came from a walmart f1 hybrid but it is producing very close to the f2 and f1. I grew it again because it tasted good and produced enough tomatoes that we always had some to share. But I am with you... this isnt everglades... lol. Ginny |

I need some basic tomato leaf 101 education. This is a picture of the leaves from plant 1. I guess they were so big I thought they were PL but on closer look they arent the right shape, right? So that would def rule out Striped Sweetheart. Ginny |

I am referring to a cross created by wind(pollen) or a stray bee from one plant to another. How far away are the two plants in question?

Here is the mystery tomato from plant #1 compared to the two most similar tomatoes growing in my garden currently...
Mystery tomato - thought the plant was everglades but it isnt.... Stupice - about the same saize but slightly different coloring and shape as Mystery tomato. Black and Brown Boar - these are larger and slightly different shape than the Mystery tom. |

Oh so that would show up this year. I was thinking of peppers where it wouldnt show up until next year. The PBTD is 4 RVs away but there are plenty of other plants nearby. But would all of the tomatoes on this plant have the same characteristics if that was the case? I'm trying to understand.... just very limited experience here. Ginny |

Defnitely not Everglades or Striped Sweetheart, the latter was developed by Lee, but he didn't tell you that.
And if it were me I think I'd wait until the fruits of the ones you ask about color up before trying to decide what they might be, b'c some varieties can have stripes in the green stage that disappear, and the reverse can happen as well. Carolyn

Someone from the crossbreeding forum will have to chime in.Pollen from one plant inserted onto the female part of another, vice a verse, baggin flower heads, succesive generations,F1-F2s etc are all Greek to me.Getting some good maters takes long enough as is let alone breeding Hybrids are for them.Have fun and good luck.
