PEANUT SHELLS
Has anyone used peanut shells in their planting mix with or without problems?
I have used them as a mulch component and have noticed that they break down slowly. Yesterday I ran some through the blender which resulted in a consistency that would work well in planting mix. The shells I am speaking of are the non salted variety. jon |

I used a whole peanut wagon full of ground up hulls in my garden one year. This was before I went to raised beds. I spread them about 6 to 8 inches deep and it was a pain to get down deep enough to mix them into the soil; but when I finally got them worked in the soil was like a sponge. I got quite a few weeds from them but my garden produced some of the largest vegetables for the next two years I have ever seen. I had broccoli with heads the size of diner plates and onions that were over 6 inches across. All of my summer crops did great also and except for the last two years those were my best tomato growing years.
I would say that of all the things I added to my garden soil over the years the crushed peanut hulls were the most helpful in building up my soil structure. I had no negative affects from them but I never used them in containers where they might act differently without the soil organisms to break them down. Bill |

Thanks for the reply Bill. I hope using in pulverized form will be beneficial.

I know something I wont tell.
Three little monkeys in a peanut shell. One can sing. One can dance. And one can make a pair of pants. Worth |
