What is the variety of the tomato in vine at supermarket
You all see those perfect tomatoes in supermarket, 5 or 6 in a cluster, red, no blemish, no cat face, perfect green stem. What variety is that? Anybody have grown them before? Can you get them that perfect from a home garden?

Could be any number of hybrid indeterminate varieties. Certainly grown in a greenhouse. Remember as well that these "perfect" looking tomatoes have been graded for looks and many less perfect fruits were sold for processing. These would be the top grade sold for fresh. Picked green and gassed to ripe which is why the whole truss is the same even red.
Some of my outdoor tomatoes look perfect. Many don't. As a home gardener, I prefer my imperfect looking but amazing tasting heirloom and OP varieties. I have not grown a hybrid for some time. KarenO Last edited by KarenO; January 11, 2015 at 12:56 AM. |
