Locally Sold Tomato Seeds
While looking at seeds the past two days, I wrote down the tomato varieties sold locally. I thought this might be a fun thread to read what is sold in local stores near you. Different parts of states in the US and in different areas of other countries.
Here is what I found locally: Walmart here carries NK, American Seeds, Southern Charm and Ferry~Morse. Beefsteak Beefmaster - Hy Better Boy - Hy Early Girl - Hy Jet Star - Hy Large Cherry Red - or - Large Red Cherry Roma VF Rutgers TSC here carries only Burpee Big Boy - Hy Early Pic - Hy Supersteak - Hy Cherries Jubilee Farmstand - Hy Roma Steak Sandwich - Hy Super Beefsteak Super Sweet 100 - Hy Sweet Aroma - Hy Prices locally are way lower for Burpee than at the Burpee site/catalog. Of course, I had to buy a pack of Super Sweet 100. There are other stores to look at. Just haven't looked yet. |

One of the Burpee store varieties for an early tomato has the same exact DTM as their very popular (and expensive) Fourth of July Hybrid, which, I think is 49. I keep meaning to buy a pack and try them side by side.

Seed racks up here have a lot more variety. Maybe it's easier to grow tomatoes and more varieties do well.
Marglobe, Brandywine, and Cherokee Purple are the three heirlooms I plan to sell the most of next spring at market. I see those varieties on seed racks a lot, as well as for sale as plants at big box stores, mostly through Bonnie Plant Farm. |

What, Wal-Mart still has seeds out?
I would have thought they would have taken them down already to put up stuff for Christmas. It's only 11 months away. Worth |

Our local big box stores have Brandy Boy, 4th of July, and Red October for sale in the new Burpee display. It's much cheaper to buy in the store.

The Easter candy has been on store shelved since the week after New Years around here.
As for seeds, I only look when I go to Home Depot and I haven't had to go there yet this year. In the past they typically have Burpee and NK. |

Up here garden centres tend to have much more selection than the box stores. Even better, there is a garden seed store I like to go to which has the best selection of all. I like to support local businesses rather than corporate stores when possible. Box stores here carry a minimal and uninspiring selection at the best of times.
