Default HydroFarm heat mats

I bought a couple of HydroFarm 9" X 191/2" heat mats to germinate my seeds this year. They worked great. My peppers have never germinated so well. I didn't use a thermostat, but I did place the mats on a layer of Hardy board with another layer of Hardy board on top of the mats. The Hardy board is fire resistant and helps to distribute the heat through the entire surface. Each mat produces 17 watts of energy so they worked well and were pretty safe to use without a thermostat.

My seeds have germinated well and I have removed the heat mats from the grow table. I don't want to simply store the mats until next fall so I am trying to think about ways to use them for the remainder of the winter. I'm thinking of using them to heat the dog house so our Lab can have a more comfortable winter. The mats are rubberized so they are water proof and they should be fire safe if placed between Hardy board sheets as they were when germinating seed. The electrical cords will not be exposed for the dog to chew on so I think it will be safe for the dog and our wooden deck where the dog house sits.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Thanks

Ted

Give the dog a bath and let it in the house so it can sleep under the covers with you.

Nope! He weighs 110 lbs and passes too much gas. Can't even stand to have him in the house.

If too warm on the doghouse floor, maybe put one or more on the inside walls of the doghouse.

If you grow any tomatoes in containers, put one under the container for early grow out.

He is trying it out right now. We have had beautiful weather the past few days and nights, but it started raining this evening with possible snow by morning. It will be much colder for the next few days. He went into the dog house when the rain started and hasn't been out since. I guess he likes it.
