Looking for a large paste tomato
Hey All, I'm in pre planning mode for this year's garden, and can use some advice. I have a few raised beds, so my space is limited. Every year I grow some slicers, cherries, and paste varieties. I'll be honest, I've grown allot of hybrids over the years, mostly out of ignorance, but I've come to like the idea of harvesting my own seeds, so I'd like to go op, as much as I can. I'm looking for a large paste variety, indeterminate, with a mid season maturity. They are going directly into canning, so productivity is more of a priority. Thanks in advance

I think Opalka would do you well.

An OP paste that I have grown and like is Ardwyna. A large ribbed pointed paste.

I second Opalka. Also consider Kosovo - not strictly a paste but a very productive large solid heart. I also favor yield and these two are my favorites for canning. Also very tasty!

Try
Work Release Paste Carol Chyko's Big Paste I grew both of them past summer - they produce huge fruits (lots of them), have very few seeds and are very yummy. I don't make sauces, but since they are all flesh - little seeds, they should be good for that purpose.

A. Coli from Wild Boar Farms did well for me last year. Big meaty paste, fairly dry and very little seed.

Jwb, I'm taking copious notes and welcome everyone's experience considering the the lack of my own. I too spent a lot of time in hybrid-hades. Not seeding my own, Roma hybrids were all I could find at the nureseries.
Last year I put my money on a dozen Jersey Devils and they were a winner for me. They are pretty much right on an 85-90 day tomato, that could be a problem at your latitude; I don't know What's interesting is.... the one on the right probably came off the same vine as the left. There were only a few on that plant of that XL size. They have a pretty decent flavor for a saucer too. PM me if you want to try a few seeds. |

JWB, Check out the link below on Ludmilla's Red Plum. Large fruits, semi determinate and early for a sauce, paste type. Interested, shoot me a PM.
