Heat loving suggestions?
Hi guys- I'm planning my second season for tomatoes and that's when it gets HOT here. Usually if I start seed in June, the temps are usually in the low 100's in Aug to plant out. Then I will get Sept/Oct tomatoes IF the weather behaves. Any how, I'm curious as to what heirlooms (bc I like to save seed) you recommend that tolerate the heat well? It will cool down but they have to be able to withstand some heat to begin with. Thoughts?
Thanks!!

We can get to 105 here but not sustained like in AZ. Always cools down at night. That being said, black cherry seems to always power through the heat. That plant is a bruiser for me. Very resilient. Not really an heirloom but is an op so you can save seed.

I've had really good luck with Neves Azorean Red, Druzba, Red Brandywine(the one from TGS), Indian Stripe, Dana's Dusky Rose, Berkley Tie Dye Pink, Spudakee, JD's Special C Tex, Arkansas Traveler, Donskoi, Kosovo, and Dr. Wyches Yellow.

Thanks AlittleSalt! Man that's the third time I've heard about Goose Creek. Some sites say its one of the best heirlooms ever!? Is this true? How have I not got seed for this one yet... Lol!

Are those your most heat tolerant varieties listed in order from most Tolerant to least Tolerant? Have you grown Costoluto Genovese, Super Sioux, or Goose Creek? |

I have good luck with Traveler and Traveler 76 that were released from the University of Arkansas in 1971 and 1976. Tasty too!

Burgundy Traveler is supposed to be the latest and greatest of the Travelers with better disease tolerance and flavor and a darker color, but I have not grown them side by side to compare. Last edited by parah; April 20, 2015 at 02:21 AM. |

Pauldavid, I have read that there was an original Arkansas Traveler tomato from over a hundred years ago thought to be extinct. I don't remember a link.

Kelly,
Goose Creek is one that should also do well. The difference between it and Eva Purple Ball, both have very good flavor, albeit not the same, production is similar. It seemed the differences in production came down to which one had the better spot on the garden. Both are excellent choices for what you are looking for. |

Black and brown boar will keep on producing through a Texas summer heat, though it slows down and the fruit goes from 3-4 oz to 1-2 oz. They, like most purple tomatoes, seem to be subject to molds, but, that is probably not an issue in Az. Definitely is one of the favorites among those I share tomatoes with.
Last year I had a Terhune plant that continued producing well in July, virtually unheard of for me. It earned itself a spot going forward. Dewayne Mater |
