Bits & Pieces: A Garden Tale

Heretofore, prior to the year 2015, history records that there have been two previous attempts at gardening by yours truly. No records remain of those ill-fated voyages beneath the tomato leaf, only a bare handful of faint memories that had taken refuge in taste buds that continue to age along with the rest of me.

Actually, the first 'garden,' such as it was, didn't fare all that poorly. It yielded up a bounty of tomatoes, a skew of peppers, and a handful of squash.

And the second endeavor a few years later? Honestly, I don't remember. It wasn't an undertaking that warranted memories being wasted upon it.

Which brings us all to this year, the Garden of 2015 - the Garden that grew its way onto Facebook, and eventually even to the distant Internet locale that is Tomatoville.

In Tomatoville, they speak tomato. In comparison, my meager attempt at creating a garden anew merely gurgles in a state of relative garden infancy.

Be that as it may, while I'm running short on tomato stakes, my garden stakes a claim to a small plot here in the gardening forum that is Tomatoville.

To the lost who or to the casual wanderer that happen upon this thread, you now bear witness to the fate of a garden that is built upon a foundation of bits and pieces of knowledge gathered like driftwood that washed upon the shore of my Internet connection.

As I was late to getting a start on this year's garden, a full couple of months past most, likewise I am late in getting a thread started here in Tomatoville to share my garden's progress with those who fancy such timid undertakings.

What better place to start, then, than today? Without further adieu, here's a glimpse at Charles' Garden 2015.

Then again, having resized a folder of photos, when I went to use the attach feature, it appears that the images are all too large for Tomatoville's image settings.

So, text for now, and I'll add a few photos, as time and opportunity allow.

Looking good Charles, but what an earth is that EMPTY bed doing

. You need to fill it with something. I wonder if it's too early to start Collards or Cabbage?

That 'empty' bed isn't actually empty. In fact, this morning was the first time that I've been able to see something beginning to sprout from it.

Tomatoville's forum settings aren't the most user-friendly, as far as posting images go. I'm used to forums just resizing images, if they are too large, so I am having to fiddle around with things, in order to post images. Bear with me.

Nice garden Charles, the good thing is our season is so long you should still get a ton of tomatoes. If you wanted more you can root the suckers off a few plants now and still have time to get a fall crop before frost. Especially any that are early to mid season varieties. Late season maters would be iffy.

The 'empty' bed is actually planted with jalapeno pepper seeds. Today, in fact, I finally encountered a little above the soil growth from the jalapeno bed. You just can't see the growth, unless you're up closer to the bed.

I've pulled up numerous different plants, along the way, if they simply don't seem to be doing too well, planting something else in their place.

I've never planted okra, before. I don't eat it, so that's one of the reasons why. In past gardens, my focus has primarily been upon cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers.

Vader, you asked me in a previous posting in another thread where I was from. I'm from up around Tigerville way.

As far as my garden being a nice garden, it's really a very modest undertaking, but compared to the other couple of attempts at gardening that I have made in the past, this year's garden encompasses the most time and effort that I have spent trying to grow a garden.

I managed to find a few photos from my second garden, from back in 2010, which I'll include with this posting.

Growing a garden necessarily entails countless different encounters with insects, unless your garden is inside or otherwise in a controlled environment.

Of all of the insect photos that I have taken of this year's garden encounters, this one is my personal favorite, thus far.
