Cauliflower famine of 2015?
Just went to our only local grocery...IGA...
Cauliflower was $7.99/crown/head.... Is there a shortage of cauliflower that I haven't heard about? |

I have no idea there was huge pile of it at the store today.
I didn't check the price but I bet it was pretty cheap. It normally is this time of year here. Cabbage dropped from 46 to 42 cents a pound. |

Yes, there is a shortage. I noticed the prices are also in that same range in Nevada. I left it in the store, how about you?

Had to stop starting cauliflower seeds, to answer this reply LOL...
Yes I left them in the store, I can get a lot of varieties / seeds for eight bucks. Never had much luck growing the rural king Bonnie plants, this is the year I learn, to grow cauliflower |

I'm starting some seeds this weekend, I've got snowball and the purple hybrid called grafitti. Purple is what happens when you let a 10 year old look at a seed catalog!

I'm having a cauliflower shortage but only because of the darn squirrels eating all my fall plants before I could even set them out in the garden. If it wasn't for them I would be happily munching on some cauliflower about now. I will have to wait for spring and see if I can get any of the new seedlings that are already growing set out and protected from the squirrels.

Well, the weather has to co-operate. The problem in 2013 & 14 was a very quick transition from hard freeze nights to 90 degree days. Then early 2015 was a monsoon, most crops rotted in the field. My family did have a decent cauliflower crop in a late garden this year, though, because it didn't get very hot in August and September.
If you want to make it through hot weather, it would be a good candidate for shade cloth. 2015 didn't get hot enough to need it, but that is a rarity. |
