Mortgage Lifter
Please tell me your experience with this plant good or bad. Have heard good and bad things and would like to know how well it did for you.
Thanks Mike |

First in my garden to get septoria. Fruit size was all over the map, ranging from marble size to full size. Produced a lot of fruit. Taste to me was ok. Will probably give it another chance this year.

Love the story but I've had less than successful results multiple times. To each his own though, it may turn out great for you.

I was underwhelmed with it and that was 5 or more years ago that I tried it.

There are at least 11 strains. Estler's is on three lists in the "...return to your garden in 2016" thread.

Havng grown several so called strains of ML I never saw anything special about them at all. But I did like the Estler one, which I got from Chuck and have offered it in some seed offers here at Tville quite recently, my seeds from Neil L in IL. Carolyn

I grew Mortgage Lifter in 2015, under wet rainy weather conditions. Yield was average 5 on a 10 scale. Nice large fruit most were 16 to 18 oz. Taste was good (7/10). In think they were Radiator Charlie, got my seed from Marsha.

This is the problem with asking for comparisons of opinions on some of the most common heirlooms, but most often with ML and Brandywine. If you didn't all grow the same "strain", you could be giving opinions on different tomatoes, which is pretty useless. I was impressed with the ML plants I bough locally less than 50% of the time. I kept trying because every once in a while I would have a good one. Try Estler's if you are going to try one, and if you can find it. If not, I would really pass it by until the Estler's is more commercially available again. Once I do a germination test on the seeds I saved last summer, I will be happy to share if they are any good.

Anytime there is a discussion of RC Mortgage Lifter then they bring up the name of Estler ML.
The two just share the ML. That is all. They are two different variety and are not related by parentage , as far as I know. The controversy seems to be that Radiator Charley got the name and made money on it. The two men lived in different locations and probably they did not even know each other. On the RC ML: I bought a Bonnie plant in 2013 and grew it. It was a dud. Like what "Carriehelene " said. I will not take a chance with it again. Gardeneer |

Gunrunner did not ask about RC Mortgage Lifter or Estler's, he just asked about Mortgage Lifter. So are you assuming everyone that ever says just Mortgage Lifter must mean RC? Because I never do. I always assume, if they don't specify, that they may not be aware there are totally different tomatoes called ML. And if each person giving their opinions/experiences does not know or does not say which they are talking about, is that assumed? Because if so, I was not aware of that.

There's a lot of peer pressure just being a Mortgage Lifter, no wonder they don't perform better.

Glad to read reports of "underwhelmed" growers of ML. That was my take, also. Wanted to love it...just couldn't.

By the way, the Estler's ML is one of my favorites. So if you have only tried RC, then you just haven't tried a good ML.
