Default What does a good tomato taste like?

This is going to sound strange, but seriously, the only tomato I remember having a taste different than the "generic, bland, grocery store or restaurant tomato" flavor was super sweet 100. Subway sliced tomatoes actually taste a little better than all the others, but nowhere near as flavorful as SS100. I am trying to imagine the same intensity of flavor in a larger tomato...I guess my imagination is not up to the challenge, lol! So TV people, please help me out, and describe what you consider a good(or great)tasting tomato, and the name and flavor of your favorite(s)

Thanks!

A good tomato tastes like my spaghetti sauce.
Sweet yet acidic with a robust flavor.
Somewhat like a good tomato paste.

A good tomato, tastes "Like Heaven on a Fork"
Sometimes a little salt and pepper are needed.

Others here might disagree, but I think you are one of the lucky ones! You are a blank slate in the tomato world. While the rest of us go year to year chasing down that elusive perfect tomato from the memories of our youth--the one our parents/grandparents/neighbor/uncle grew--you can grow just about any tomato out there and it'll be the best tomato you've ever had.

Enjoy the journey!

I like a tomato to be a little more acidic than sweet. I like PWR tomatoes too.

Sweet, acidic, rich, deep flavor, juicy, not mushy, yet not overly firm, with a nice lingering flavor. In short, intensely flavored tomatoes. Mild tomatoes are not for me.

Lol, SS100 are spitters compared to a good black tomato IMO. I started out like you. When I was young I wouldn't eat tomatoes at all, so I started without really knowing how good a perfectly ripe home grown tomato could be. The more I grow the more impressed I am at just how much flavor and the variety of flavors their are. Try to find a few tomato tastings to attend, then you can narrow down what you like. I am always surprised by a few every year.

I know I don't like sweet all that much. I'd take Big Beef and Goliath over Sweet100 and Sun Gold anytime.

That assertive pow of strong but wonderfully balanced flavor. Sweet is great as long as there is strong acid and a lot of umami to go with it. Rebel Yell, and German Johnson- Benton have that.

What does a good tomato taste like?

It tastes like lunchtime in summer at grandma and grandpa's house when I was a kid.

I think we may have similar taste buds. I need to keep watching your grow list thread closely!
