Default Not Cherokee Purple

Here are a few pics of the Cherokee Purple I grew from Baker Creek seeds this year. I think this was an unintended cross as the plant and fruit are distinctively different than Cherokee Purple. The plant is shorter, but still stocky. The fruit is more a mahogany or chocolate color than purple when it ripens and rather than having a earthy flavor, it's sweeter but still lightly earthy and still very meaty. The fruit is blockier, having ribbed shoulders as opposed to the smooth shoulders of the Cherokee Purple.

I'll be saving seeds if any of the breeders/collectors are interested in taking a look at it. I won't have many so It'll be limited to about 3-5 seed per person.

Definitely not CP, likely a stray seed as it is potato leaf. In order for it to be a cross it would have to be an F2 (for the PL characteristic to show it would not be possible in an F1 cross with a RL Cherokee Purple)
Bet it tastes good regardless, most PL tomatoes do imo.

Good info thanks!
Some of the leaves seem like they show characteristics of RL as well. Is that possible?

I know these aren't as dark as True Black Brandywine offered by Baker Creek but could it be TBB?

They're not ripe yet. When they ripen up I'll take a few pics and post them. They look like the inside of a cherokee purple, meaty, few seeds, but the color isn't quite the same and neither is the taste. Redder and sweeter.

Good call Karen.

And for the person who suggested True Black Brandywine,I think you should read this thread from the Legacy Forum.

http://tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=7749

There are now TWO Black Brandywines out there, unfortunately, the one above kind of well, maybe ,offered by WWWvia Baker Creek and then the other one which was a cross in the growing fields of Seeds by Design in CA,when Linda of TGS was dealing with them.

She just called it Black Brandywine, but it turned out to be unstable, one fruit form looked like Black from Tula and another fruit form was pretty much round and was a bag of seeds.Linda pulled it from her website and catalog ASAP when she found that out, but seeds had gone out, and occasionally I see some growing it or saying they are.

Thanks Carolyn for that tidbit, I was wondering if it was just a simple scenario of Baker Creek shipping the wrong seed of course I'm excited if it's truly a new variation or cross though...

Here are pics of the tomato sliced. I have to say it tastes like a cherokee purple with sweetness substituted for earthiness. It is SO sweet.

It looks tasty! Congrats maybe it is a new tomato, was this the only plant you grew from your seed?

Yep, it was the only plant I grew from the seed packet. If you want a few seeds from this tomato PM me your address.

I waited until this one was as ripe as possible before cutting.
