Label Ideas
I would like to see other ideas for labeling plants.
I thought of this idea last year but it kept raining so much that I didn't take the time to make them. It's pretty simple and easy to make them. I'll add pictures. In MS Word, I used 28 point Times New Roman font. Clear Contact paper on both sides of the paper. 3 x 4" tomato seed bags Clothespins |

No plant labeling here. I keep a chart indoors where everything is planted. Even that usually isn't needed once most plants are producing ripe fruit. I alternate leaf types, colors, fruit size/shape so I generally know what all ~100 plants are as I go down the rows.
I'm due for a senior moment any year now, though. |

The problem I found with putting a piece of paper in a ziplock bag was that it would blacken with the heat of the sun, making the whole thing unreadable. I've seen a system where a piece of plastic like surveyors use (long ribbon) or like police or emergency tape was used. The plant name was written with a Sharpie and allowed to blow about. This seemed to last longer because of varying exposures to the discoloration of a hot sunshine on it.
I have a cheap foolproof way, but it is labor intensive and a bit tedious.

I use wood lathe cut to about 18", at a slant so it hammers into the ground easily, and marked with permanent Sharpie.

I hope your printer ink doesn't fade in the sun. Best to have a back-up plan.

I agree. I've got it all on an Excel spreadsheet/document. If I have to re-do them, I'll probable use mini blinds - or something from this thread.

I keep a roll of survey tape in the garden on one of my bamboo stakes and use #s for my tomatoes. I make copies of my numbered list and have them about in plastic sleeves. I only have to write out the name once when i plant my starts. Or when i gift some plants i'll tag it with table saw rippings since free. I use the same for new salads or any new veggie variety.
With the survey tape i can move it up as the plant grows and about picking time it is at eye level. The white plastic nursery tags are good also like the ones on trees but i ran out a few years ago and they need to be ordered...survey tape is found in any hardware store. Works ok for a qiuckie tie-up as well. I like the velcro for tie-ups, the thick ones. Not the ones in garden centers. They can be moved easily and last a few seasons. |

I've been using the plant markers and a Sharpie but it fades. Since this was posted I tried to think of something permanent and then remembered all my fruit trees come with an aluminum tag that has lasted for 3 years on some of the trees. It's just thin and makes an impression when you write with a ballpoint pen. So off to goggle I go and found these Aluminum Marking Tags
http://www.gemplers.com/product/T800...ags-Box-of-100 BUT to go the cheapest route would be to use foil tape for A/C. If you cut a 2" piece and fold it over to make it thicker, 1 roll will make 900 permanent labels for a little over $8. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Nashua-Ta...7792/100030120 |

Yep, I've got plastic blinds and aluminum tape. And at least 100 painted white 1x2 stakes.
I just finished the 94 labels I already had made up. It's a windy day and they do blow around a lot. So far, none have blown off yet. (Yet) |
