New possibilities
Each year I get the chance to find new possibilies for something new and unusual. Lately I have been paying more attention to odd shapes to go along with odd colors.
This tomato came from a Cherokee Purple. Plant was loaded. How would you describe this shape? Large plump pear? Skin was unique, some spots and lines but not really striped. Seed came from a commercial source so it did not cross with a striped variety in my garden. Very dense flesh. here is a top view. [img] Red yellow green and orange striped roma shape? Not super meaty like a roma, more juice and very edible. I expect to get alot of new shapes and who knows what colors from this grow-out. Will be interesting to say the least. This tomato came from a totally different line even though the color is similar. How do I describe this shape? This one came from my Red Boar line. Large cherry size, oh soooo sweet. Showed different leaves, reminded me of other cherry tomato leaves. Can a mid size tomato mutate to a large cherry? I have been looking at photos of last year to plan for this year and these came up. Several others also that I will try to post. Good bye round red tomatoes. |

Taking one at a time.
The somewhat pear shaped one is similar to a couple of varieties I've grown before. They were described as paste tomatoes, but the shape is more like a light bulb. The one on the post looks like a punching bag. I've seen fruit shaped like that which was from a cross of an ovoid paste variety with a large beefsteak. I suspect that one will segregate into a range of different sizes and shapes. The large cherry sized one at the bottom is most likely from a cross with a cherry or maybe grape shaped variety. Cherry size and shape is dominant over just about all other genetics. Either way you slice and dice these, looks like you have some interesting crosses to work on stabilizing. Fusion |

Looks like an eggplant shape, Brad. And that last photo of the cherry type tomato ... very nice! PV |

Here is another one. Came from Green Zebra and it was also commercial seed source.
The people I lease land from grew 3000 plants of GZ last year and this is the only oddball in the bunch. |

'Punching Bag' was a good description of the Cherokee Purple. First thing that came to my mind was 'Weather Balloon'.

weird
Some very cool things going on out in your fields. I'm more than a little jealous! There are 5000 plants out in my field and everything comes just as it should (except for the large red GMG that was fantastic). I want something NEW and WONDERFUL too!

I was going to agree with PV about being eggplant shaped, but I must confess I love Lee's description, indeed they do look like Higgley Town Heroes . Whom I always thought looked like Weeble Wobbles
Gorgeous tomatoes in all the pics. |
