Labling errors

I got it wrong, all wrong, very wrong. The plant I have labeled in the garden as Cherokee Purple is clearly a Porter. The plant labeled Principe Borghese is definitely a San Marzano. My Porter Improved is turning out to be a Texas Wild Cherry and my Rio Grande are really nothing but ornaments because both are mule plants and have no blossoms at all.

I do binary to hex conversions in my head but I cant get my tomato plant labels straight...

Sounds like a fun game. Purposely mix up your labels and try to guess what is what.

Mule plant? I hope I never encounter one of those!

I have a Sweet 100 plant with tomatoes that are 4x larger than they should be. I'm thinking it's a plant that I had to replace and forgot to write it down.

Not so bad, at least now you know what they are. The worst is when you have mix-ups of similar looking varieties, nearly impossible to tell them apart. They all taste good, but remain a mystery and cant save and name their seeds.

I have that too. Just didnt want to admit it but now you force me to.

For many years I would dig out volunteers in my tomato field,usually about 10 of them, and transplant them to my side garden to see if I could ID them.

I had a data book where I recorded the varieties in each row, but location meant nothing since Charlie would plow deeply in the Fall,sow winter rye and then come back in the Spring and plow that under deeply and then prepare my field.

So orignal location meant nothing in terms of guessing what I had.

All to say that yes, sometimes I could ID the volunteers and for sure sometimes I couldn't b/c they were seeds from varieties that had crossed.

But I loved doing it anyways.

Of about 40 plants, so far I know I got one wrong. It was supposed to be a HGT (micro dwarf ) but it sure isn't. I have one or 2 such mistakes every year.
It is fun to anticipate and wait to find out what it is going to be.

I got every one of my labels right but I dont care because they are all faded and some dont have labels at all but I know what they are.

Ozone, just think - in less than a month, it will be time to start fall tomatoes

A lot of sites say to start fall tomatoes where we are the first week in July, but that's actually a little late. I'll start mine sometime before June 15.

Fall tomatoes... Never really thought about it in Illinois, but I would have to start them next month.

I'm happy to that I have never gotten my labels wrong on my own seed starts. However, I have purchased some plants over the years that were not as labeled.

Several people who get tomatoes from me throw away the plant labels. They say they really don't care what the names are; they just enjoy eating the fruits. Some of us are a little more concerned not to mix up or misidentify plants than "normal" (I read that as completely abnormal) people are.
