Cherries

I'm not a huge fan of cherry tomatoes, although this year I have been pleasantly surprised. We planted Isis candy, Green Krim, Sugar, Helsing ★★★★★★★★ Blue, and Negro Azteca. Really enjoying each one except HJB. The jury is still out. They are easy on the eyes though. We are also having a great year for fruit set. Very excited. Both BW sudderth and cowlicks are performing 3 times better than last year. Indian stripe, VORLON, and CP are doing excellent.

So, what is everybodies favorite cherry?

I have many favorites.

Old fashion taste is, Porter
A little bit more Acidic is, A Grappoli Corbarino
Subtle/mid sweet is, Japanese Pink Cherry
Sweet is, Ambrosia Red
Different is, Sungold
Blue is, HJB, but I'm growing a lot of others this year.
Orange is, Oranje Van Goeijenbier
Yellow is, Medovaya Kaplya

Glad to hear some success story. A lot of us are having problems with our plants at this stage.

My CP and IS are also doing great. Black from Tula is doing even much better.

I am not a fan of small fruiting cherries either. I have a Riesentraube, which is a large grape type. It is flowering now. Also I am growing a micro dwarf yellow cherry called Hahms Gelbe Topftomate. It is mostly an ornamental, though it is usually very productive considering its less than 14" height.

Appreciate an update on Helsing when available as I have planted it also. My other cherries include Tel Aviv Train, Knopka, Isis Candy, Black Cherry and Bubjekosoko all obtained through Tania. Will not get tomatoes in my area until mid July at the earliest...

I grew Dancing w/Smurfs ate a food-bank garden last year. Nice production and a pleasant sweet taste if you let them get good and ripe.

Over the last several years growing for a local food-bank I've had the opportunity to trial quite a few different cherries. Some standouts for me are:
Beam's Yellow Pear (incredible "buttery" flavor, vigorous producer, far superior to the generic Yellow Pear)
Green Doctors (fruity, sweet and a little tangy)
Snow White (big, beautiful, delicious pearls, very productive)
Blush (the queen of the Artisan cherries)

I agree, of the Bumblebee series Sunrise is the best. I'm trying Barry's Crazy for the first time this year, glad to hear it praised.

It looks like bumble bee but grape shape.

Some very tasty ones for me have Mohamed, Gold Nugget, Ambrosia (an experimental version), SunGold F1, GoldKrone, Sweet Million F1 and Gardener's Delight.
All have been tasty, meaning they had enough sweetness and also other flavor components..

This year, I'm trying Purple Bumblebee - very high expectations!

Favorite cherry is Sungold F1. Carbon Copy is a large cherry that has earned its way back, productive with a nice rich dark tomato flavor. Every year our tomato part of the garden has a theme, where a sizeable chunk of plants grown fit the theme. 2015 was black tomatoes, 2016 is cherry tomatoes.

This year in addition to Sungold F1, we are trying Sunsugar (to see if there are any differences in our garden with Sungold), Carbon Copy, Green Doctors Frosted, Indigo Cherry Drops, Blush, Sunrise Bumblebee, Mexico Midget, and Zluta Kytice. (As well as some dwarf project cherries at the F2/F3 level).

I'm excited for all the new ones, especially Sunrise Bumblebee and Blush given the things I've read and the things said right here in this thread. We grew Purple Bumblebee 2 years ago, it was good flavored--nice tomato flavor and very productive, I did note I wished it had more sweetness and a bit softer texture.

For classic red cherries I like Fox Cherry and Tommy Toe. (I also love the name!) A small red cherry on a huge, prolific plant but with huge flavor is Matt's Wild Cherry, and a tasty yellow companion to that is Russian Mini Yellow. For hybrids, Sungold has to be on the list, and the delightful yellow Esterina. Black Cherry is on my every year list, and Pearly Pink Orange, because it is such an unusual perfect container plant. In the Artisan series, in my order of preference, my faves are Blush, Lucky Tiger, and Sunshine, Pink and Purple Bumblebee. (I'm bummed that my Sunshines didn't germinate this year!)

I had a Black Vernissage that looked like this when fully ripe last year. I thought they were similar to Purple Bumblebee, just a bit bigger & fatter, slightly less striped, more tender skin, and a little sweeter when fully ripe.

Violet Jasper was also similar to both, a little closer to a Vernissage is size, more Bumblebee in striping. V.Jasper also had good flavor with more tang than sweet, a firmer overall texture, nice green gel and heavy producer.

As usual I have to recommend Fred Hemple's Bumblebee line. Really fantastic. Good luck with HJB but tbh I hated them more than about anything I have ever grown. They seem to have the splitting and spitting genes.
